Saints Release Carney

The New Orleans Saints released kicker John Carney today.

According to Saints officials, Carney asked to be let go after the club obtained fellow kicker Olindo Mare in a trade with the Miami Dolphins.

Carney connected on 23 of 25 field goal attempts last season for the Saints but team officials apparently wanted a younger kicker with a stronger leg to at least challenge him for the job in training camp. The Saints met with free agent Mike Vanderjagt earlier in the offseason but didn't sign him, then traded a sixth-round draft choice to the Dolphins for Mare.
