Three Top Draft Prospects Reportedly Admitted Past Marijuana Use During Combine Interviews

Three top draft prospects reportedly admitted to past marijuana use in interviews taped by the league at the NFL scouting combine in February and distributed to each of the 32 teams.

Pro Football Weekly reported that Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson, Clemson defensive end Gaines Adams and Louisville defensive tackle Amobi Okoye made the admissions during the standard interviews.

All three players are considered possible top-10 selections in the draft. An official with one NFL team, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the interviews are not meant to be released or discussed publicly, said this morning he didn't think the draft status of any of the players would be affected. Players also undergo drug testing at the combine and there's no indication that any of the three tested positive.

what the hell, who cares? Why on earth would you even report this? Did you report every player that has had a sip of alcohol in there life? How many players answered this question?

Posted by: the dude | April 19, 2007 10:55 AM

How many did not admit it?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 19, 2007 11:20 AM

Classless leak on the NFL's part. Why on earth would any of these players trust the NFL, cooperate with investigations or admit to anything in the future? Pretty stupid decision on the NFL's part. The NFL needs to start drug testing Danny and Vinny to make sure they are not under the influence with some of the deals they have made in the past few years.

Yes, 'cos pot and other illegal drugs are clearly PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS.

I really want to see Clavin Johnson try to catch 20 passes for 250 yards and 5 TD while he's stoned.

NFL - STFU!!!

The problem with this is that the media once again goes overboard in reporting BS. Who the hell cares!!? No one is perfect and I get so sick of seeing ESPN, WP,FOX Sports acting as if they are the morale police. Last I checked NO HUMAN BEING is PERFECT! We are so quick to judge in this country..

Amazing our culture still considers marijuana illegal and alcohol legal. All in the money and the lobby groups. I am sure at least 90% of the draftees have been drunk at least once during their college years.

But that is ok I guess since alcohol is legal and plus not getting caught.

Who cares?

Posted by: Dancer | April 19, 2007 11:59 AM

If it won't affect their draft status, and they didn't test positive, WHY is this CONFIDENTIAL information being reported? HOW is this news?

WHO CARES IF SOME KIDS SMOKED WEED?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 19, 2007 12:01 PM

Whoever leaked that info just ensured that no player will ever make the mistake of giving an honest interview at future combines.

Posted by: Jah | April 19, 2007 12:08 PM

Big difference between admitting smoking it and testing postive for it during the workout or during your career. When illegal drugs would be a top ten industry in your country if recognized, we need to stop kidding ourselves. 99.9 percent of the people on this blog would recognize the smell of weed upon instant contact with our sinuses. Does not matter if they went to Howard or Harvard, or Sidwell Friends or Cesar Chavez ES either!

Does anyone remember what this very same kind of rumor did to the draft status of an All American defensive tackle in the mid 90's? He dropped from a possible 2-3 pick to number 11, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers still thank everyone ahead of him for listening. His name was Warren Sapp. Maybe another team leaked this info hoping one of these kids will trickle down to them. Unless the NFL can prove the kids are still using, WHO CARES?

Actually, I liked to carry about 75 ft. of hemp rope in the car while growing up in SD, complete with burns on the ends.

Everybody knows hemp rope is made from MaryJane. If asked, I replied I burned the rope. And didn't inhale. ;)

And since the rope was legal, no probable cause existed to search the car.

But I don't know anything about smokin' the stuff. ;)

I care if someone smokes pot, and the NFL should care too. These potheads are about to sign contracts worth a lot of money. Whether these stoners are mature enough to handle it is a question worth considering.

Posted by: mart | April 19, 2007 1:24 PM

after they get their signing bonuses they'll be able to smoke a whole lot more of it, just like the rest of the nfl...who cares

Posted by: kris | April 19, 2007 1:25 PM

big surprise, but only three?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 19, 2007 1:39 PM

The real question is which of the three is going to end up smoking it with Ricky down in Miami this year.

Posted by: greg | April 19, 2007 1:44 PM

as a part of the same generation as these guys (a couple yrs older, but whatever), i can attest to the fact that damn near all your darling athletic prodigies have at least tried it. maybe they never really got into it, never tried it again, or maybe they even *gasp* smoked again every now and then, but to reiterate... who cares? because they're gonna be on pro football teams, they should be denied the very same experimental stages that most teenagers/young adults go thru? don't even get me started on the reasons for/against legalization. this country is so retarded, in the true sense of the word, when it comes to marijuana.

get over it, america

Posted by: pack4life | April 19, 2007 1:54 PM

I'm a healthcare professional and I'm a bit tired of the hyprocisy when the issue is marijuana vs alcohol. Yes, canibis is illegal, but unless the NFL has a positive test, this is not newsworthy..period! Last I checked, more people have died from LEGAL prescription drugs than weed. So, please no one get on your moral high horse and start calling these guys stoners. The real issue many of you have is that these young guys smoked weed (not unlike many of the rest of us who are leading successful careers), and stand to make millions despite this fact. Instead, say that you're pissed that you're not 6'4'', 225lb and don't run a 4.3 in the 40, then I'd believe many of the Idealists out there.

that has nothing to do if they smoke pot or not, if you care that someone smokes pot, then you need to find a new hobby ned flanders

Posted by: the dude | April 19, 2007 2:13 PM

Okay Mart,

Anybody who smokes weed even just once is a stoner. Get over yourself. The NFL really needs to look at the information leaks at the combine. This and the Wonderlic info from last year should not be all over the media.

Would people's reactions be different if the story was "Three Top Draft Prospects Reportedly Admitted Past Heroin Use During Combine Interviews"?

If so, why?

Posted by: BF | April 19, 2007 3:22 PM

You didn't just compare Heroin to Marijuana, did you? Heroin has serious, adverse medical consequences. Marijuana makes you crave a bucket of Ben and Jerry's and pretzels. It is clinically impossible to overdose on Marijuana. I'd hope the majority of the readers understand the problems associated with Heroin, given "our" close proximity to Baltimore where Heroin use is practically an epidemic.

Posted by: ALecW81 | April 19, 2007 3:33 PM

The story would be relevant if any of these guys gave an indication that they could turn out like Ricky Williams who did a lot of damage to himself and the Dolphins with marijuana. But since they presumably all passed the drug test, there is nothing to suggest that they are a risky draft choice.

Posted by: booyah | April 19, 2007 3:47 PM

Good. Now, the guy we most need -- Gaines Adams, might fall to us at six rather than getting snapped up by the Lions at 2.

We can capitalize on the absurdity of penalizing a player for using a harmless drug, infinitely safer than alcohol.

Now, if a player is caught for possession with intent to distribute -- that starts to look like a problem.

What do you think Riggins did before he rushed to MVP of the Super Bowl, to an NFL TD record, and into the Hall of Fame? Riggo could no doubt make it into some junky Hall of Fame as well.

And, it matters not one lick as long as the performance is there in practice and when the lights come on Sunday.

Posted by: Thank God | April 19, 2007 4:15 PM

So what? Marijuana is one of the more benign recreational drugs -- much better for you than alcohol for instance. This only means they are normal young men. I would guess that a higher percentage of NFL players use marijuana than the entire population does. It doesn't matter.

Posted by: Colorado Kool Aid | April 19, 2007 5:22 PM

"You didn't just compare Heroin to Marijuana, did you?"

No, I simply asked the question if people's reactions would be different if someone broke the law with a different drug.

To excuse one illegal drug, while not others is like excusing underage drinking if it's beer, but not if it's whisky.

I won't get into the argument as to whether or not marijuana should be legal or not. But the fact remains that it is currently illegal, and what these people did was break the law.

Posted by: BF | April 19, 2007 10:17 PM

Sure I smoked it, but I didn't inhale.
