Strahan, Giants Vying for Leverage?

The New York Giants are expressing interest in Simeon Rice with fellow veteran defensive end Michael Strahan absent from their Albany, N.Y., training camp.

Rice, who was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week after refusing to take a pay cut, is scheduled to be in New York on Tuesday and undergo a physical Wednesday.

Strahan has not reported to training camp and informed the Giants last week through his agent that he was contemplating retirement.

Both sides could be playing a leverage game. During the offseason, Strahan reportedly wanted the Giants to renegotiate a contract that pays him salaries of $4 million in each of the next two seasons. Many people in the league believe that Strahan's retirement talk was a ploy designed to try to spur negotiations on a new contract, and the Giants' interest in Rice is a tactic to attempt to prompt Strahan to report to camp.
