Deal Between Lions, C. Johnson Could Be At Hand

There are rumblings around the league that the Detroit Lions are closing in on a contract agreement with wide receiver Calvin Johnson, the second player chosen in the NFL draft in April.

Talks between agent Bus Cook and Lions officials have intensified in recent days and a deal appears to be within reach.

Three of the top five picks in the draft remain unsigned by their teams. Agreements between the Oakland Raiders and quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the top overall selection, and the Arizona Cardinals and offensive tackle Levi Brown, the fifth overall choice, also could be completed within the next few days.

The trickiest negotiations continue to be those between the Cleveland Browns and quarterback Brady Quinn, the 22nd pick. Agent Tom Condon apparently is seeking a deal worth more than the 22nd draft slot normally would dictate, given that Quinn is a quarterback and soon could be the team's starter. The Browns appear to be holding firm that Quinn should get no more than his draft status warrants.
