Romo's Sharp Performance Is Promising Early Sign for Cowboys

One of the big questions about the Dallas Cowboys as the Wade Phillips coaching era gets under way is which version of Tony Romo will be on display this season, the promising young quarterback that became a Pro Bowler in his first half-season as an NFL starter last year or the mistake-prone one that contributed heavily to the team's end-of-season unraveling?

The early returns were promising Thursday night as the Cowboys beat the Indianapolis Colts in their preseason opener. Romo was sharp, completing 10 of 11 passes and leading two field goal drives.

Romo also has relinquished his duties as the holder for kicker Martin Gramatica. It was Romo's bobbled snap on a short would-be field goal attempt by Gramatica in the closing moments in Seattle that knocked the Cowboys from last season's NFC playoffs.

Quarterback Peyton Manning played only one possession for the Colts. Rookie Tony Ugoh had a few good moments as he took over for the recently retired Tarik Glenn as the Colts' starter at left tackle.
