Week 3 Rankings

It's tempting to just put the Patriots first (after their dominating performance against the Chargers) and the Colts second (after just getting by against the Titans), and just say that none of the rest of it matters. Is anyone else any good? The Steelers look pretty solid. But the Cowboys are vulnerable on defense and the Broncos just squeaked by the Raiders. Are the Texans, Packers, Redskins, 49ers and Lions for real? Who knows. For now, their records dictate they get the rankings they got. The Ravens win but move down because the team to which they lost in Week 1, the Bengals, was proven to be fraudulent by the Browns. The Bears, likewise, win but move down because they lost to the Chargers in the opener and look what those Chargers did in New England. It's all an early-season mess. You figure it out.

Two big games coming up this week will help illuminate the top of the rankings: San Fran at Pittsburgh and Indy at Houston. I think both San Fran and Houston will be revealed as pretenders. At least I hope San Fran will be since their first round draft choice will be our only one next year. And who can figure out Carolina? Are the Rams that bad or is Houston that good?

Are these rankings simply based on record? If so, whats the point? Or is your subjective and expert opinion that the records have perfectly borne out the quality of the teams so far?

I'm not trying to be rude, by the way. I'm genuinely curious. Apologies if the first comment came off that way.

It's a good question. It's just been a weird early season, so I went more by records today than I usually do. There are just so many teams that I don't have much of a feel for; I think the Eagles are good, for example, but their play so far simply hasn't justified that feeling. Maybe by next week I'll feel like I have more of a handle on some teams and I'll mix up the records more. As I wrote in the intro, I kind of feel like the league right now is the Patriots, the Colts and Everyone Else.
