Bucs, Desperately Needing Running Back Help, Sign Z. Crockett
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed running back Zack Crockett, a 12-year NFL veteran formerly with the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders.
The Buccaneers are shorthanded at the position after losing starting tailback Carnell (Cadillac) Williams to a season-ending knee injury and his replacement, Michael Pittman, to an ankle injury that is to keep him sidelined for six to eight weeks. The Buccaneers tried unsuccessfully to lure Corey Dillon out of retirement, then were thwarted in a bid to trade for Minnesota Vikings backup Mewelde Moore. Earnest Graham has taken over as the team's starter at the position.
Crockett, 34, formerly played for Buccaneers Coach Jon Gruden in Oakland and worked out for the Buccaneers last week.
He took the roster spot left vacant when the Buccaneers placed quarterback Chris Simms on the injured reserve list Tuesday.
