Delhomme to Undergo Season-Ending Elbow Surgery
The Carolina Panthers will be without quarterback Jake Delhomme for the remainder of the season.
Delhomme decided today to undergo season-ending elbow surgery after having trouble while trying to throw the ball, Coach John Fox announced.
Delhomme hurt the elbow on his right (throwing) arm during a Sept. 23 game against the Atlanta Falcons. The Panthers called the injury a strained elbow, and Fox initially indicated that Delhomme would not have to undergo surgery. But Fox and Delhomme later acknowledged that Delhomme might have to undergo surgery if it did not appear that the injury would heal without it, and Delhomme was unable to practice or even throw the ball the past couple weeks.
He had thrown eight touchdown passes and only one interception before being hurt.
David Carr has taken over as the Panthers' starter and engineered Sunday's victory over the New Orleans Saints. But Carr, the former top overall selection in the NFL draft who signed with the Panthers after five seasons with the Houston Texans, hurt his back during the Saints game, leaving his status unclear for this weekend's game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Undrafted rookie Matt Moore filled in for Carr on Sunday, but Carr returned to finish the game. He said after the game he initially thought his back injury might be career-ending.
