Rams Sitting Down Injured Bulger for Frerotte
The winless St. Louis Rams are sitting down quarterback Marc Bulger.
Bulger has been playing with two broken ribs and reportedly was told by Coach Scott Linehan that he would sit down for a week or two.
Backup Gus Frerotte is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Bulger was named to the NFC Pro Bowl team last season after throwing for 4,301 yards and 24 touchdowns. In July, he became the highest-paid player in franchise history when he signed a six-year, $65 million contract extension that included $27 million in guaranteed money.
But he has struggled while playing on an injury-depleted offense that's minus left tackle Orlando Pace, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the opening game, and tailback Steven Jackson, who's sidelined by a partially torn groin muscle. Bulger has thrown only two touchdown passes and four interceptions in four games and is the league's 28th-rated passer. He's been playing with broken ribs since being sacked six times by the San Francisco 49ers in the season's second game.
The Rams rank last in the NFL in scoring and their record dropped to 0-4 with Sunday's 35-7 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys in Irving, Tex.
Frerotte replaced Bulger during that game and completed three of six passes for 29 yards. Now the 36-year-old journeyman quarterback takes over as the Rams' starter. It will be Frerotte's 80th NFL start for his seventh different team. He previously made starts for the Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos, Cincinnati Bengals, Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins. He made 15 starts for the Dolphins in 2005 when Linehan was that club's offensive coordinator.
Linehan said earlier in the week that he had not considering sitting down Bulger.
