Chiefs Remaining Elusive on Details of L. Johnson's Injury

Kansas City Chiefs Coach Herman Edwards isn't exactly denying a report by a Denver television station that Chiefs tailback Larry Johnson will miss the rest of the season because of a broken bone in his foot.

Edwards told reporters Wednesday that the injury still is being evaluated and he knows little beyond the fact that Johnson won't play this weekend against the Broncos.

"What I just told you is what I've been told," Edwards said. "And that's all I care to know about, to be quite honest. What you have to understand is when you're a football coach, here's what you want to know on Monday or on Sunday: Is a player going to be available to play on Sunday? Doctor says maybe, questionable, doubtful. Once they tell me they don't think he's going to be able to play, fine. I move on. That's all I've got to do. I don't have to worry about next week. I can't control next week. I've got to concentrate on this week."

The Chiefs have said only that Johnson has a midfoot injury. They're planning to use Priest Holmes and rookie Kolby Smith to split carries in Johnson's absence.

"If they tell me something, when I get the message this is what it is, I'll be the first to tell you," Edwards said. "I have nothing to hide. What do I have to hide? I've been told exactly what I just told you. Now, if someone else has been told something, good for them. That's what I've been told. All I want to know, to be quite honest, is he going to play Sunday? No, he's not playing. Okay, next."
