The Scandal That Wasn't
There were reports throughout the day Monday that the New England Patriots had complained to the league after Sunday's victory in Indianapolis that the Colts were illegally piping artificial crowd noise through speakers at the RCA Dome during the game.
It's an accusation that has been made in the past against the Colts and it had extra flavor this time because the charge was being made by the Patriots, who were penalized by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for using videotaping equipment to steal the play signals of the New York Jets in the opening game of the season.
There was an unusual noise on the CBS broadcast of the game but the network indicated it was caused by a technical glitch, and league officials said they weren't investigating anything else about the game.
The Colts issued a written statement that said: "We trust this will put an end to the ridiculous and unfounded accusations that the Colts artificially enhanced crowd noise at the RCA Dome in any way."
