With A. Smith's Season Over, Former Terp S. Hill Becomes Niners' Starter
The disappointing season of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith is over.
Smith is to undergo surgery to repair the damage to his right shoulder initially suffered in late September. The former top overall draft choice made an unsuccessful attempt to return to the lineup. But Smith's shoulder continued to plague him and he developed forearm problems as well, and he and Coach Mike Nolan clashed over the handling of the injuries.
Shaun Hill, formerly of the University of Maryland, becomes the club's starter this week, with veteran Trent Dilfer sidelined by a concussion.
