Browns Plan to Extend Crennel's Contract

General Manager Phil Savage said at a news conference today that the Cleveland Browns plan to extend the contract of Coach Romeo Crennel.

Crennel is three seasons into a five-year contract and led the Browns to a 10-6 record this season. He'd gone 10-22 in his first two seasons in Cleveland, putting his job security in doubt.

There had been talk in recent weeks that the Miami Dolphins might try to pry away Crennel to be their coach, but it appears the Browns have no intention of allowing him to leave.

Savage also indicated that the Browns intend to keep quarterbacks Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn for next season. Anderson is eligible for restricted free agency this spring after his solid season kept Quinn, a first-round draft choice last spring, on the bench as a rookie. There have been reports that the Browns might be willing to trade Anderson this offseason, but Savage indicated that he plans to try to sign Anderson to a longterm contract and retain both quarterbacks. Savage indicated that Anderson deserves to be the Browns' starter entering next season.
