Chargers Extend Contract of GM Smith

The San Diego Chargers extended the contract of General Manager A.J. Smith through the 2014 season.

The five-year extension is worth more than $2 million per season, an NFL source said. Smith's contract had been set to expire after the 2009 season.

The Chargers persevered after a rugged beginning to the season to win another AFC West title with Norv Turner as their coach, on the heels of Marty Schottenheimer being fired--in part because of his inability to work with Smith--following a loss in a conference semifinal last season.
