Colts Owner Says Caldwell Would Succeed Dungy If Dungy Retires

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said during an appearance Thursday night in New York that the team's quarterbacks coach, Jim Caldwell, will succeed Tony Dungy as head coach if Dungy retires.

According to the Associated Press, Irsay said he remains hopeful that Dungy will return but if not, Caldwell "would be the guy."

Irsay was making an appearance at the New York Public Library at an exhibition of the "On The Road" manuscript, which he owns.

Dungy has said he plans to announce a decision by Monday.

Caldwell was a candidate for head coaching jobs in Atlanta and Baltimore but withdrew from consideration this week, prompting speculation that he's been told privately Dungy will retire and he'll be the successor.
