Decision Time for Dungy, Holmgren?

This is the day on which Indianapolis Colts Coach Tony Dungy has indicated he would make an announcement about whether he will return next season.

Dungy, for a third straight offseason, is contemplating retirement. He said last week that he would make his decision by the weekend and make an announcement today. Colts owner Jim Irsay indicated last week he remained hopeful that Dungy would return for another season, but named quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell as the successor to Dungy if Dungy retires.

Caldwell withdrew from consideration for other head coaching vacancies around the league last week, on the heels of the Colts' season-ending playoff loss to the San Diego Chargers. That produced speculation that Dungy already had decided to retire and had informed Caldwell privately of his intention.

Seattle Seahawks Coach Mike Holmgren also could be nearing a decision about whether to retire or return for another season. Jim Mora, the former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons who served as the Seahawks' secondary coach this season, could be the successor if Holmgren retires. Mora withdrew from consideration last week for the Washington Redskins' head coaching vacancy.
