Waiting for Super Bowl Assistants Could Be Risky Strategy

New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels are the latest targets of the Washington Redskins' coaching search. They are the new hot assistant coaches in the league and the Redskins apparently have decided to wait until after the Super Bowl to hire a head coach, leaving open the possibility of interviewing one or both of them.

But that approach is risky for a few reasons:

Who will be left to be hired as assistant coaches at that point?

What if McDaniels still doesn't want to interview for a head coaching job?

What if the Giants defense--and thus Spagnuolo--has a dud of a performance in the Super Bowl?

Spagnuolo is in his first season as the Giants' defensive coordinator after eight seasons as a Philadelphia Eagles assistant, the final three as the club's linebackers coach. The Giants led the league in sacks this season and ranked seventh in the NFL in total defense. But it's only in recent weeks that Spagnuolo has emerged as a coveted head coaching candidate. Many in the league thought he was the Atlanta Falcons' top head coaching choice. But the Falcons apparently believed they couldn't afford to wait until after the Super Bowl and hired Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Smith instead.

McDaniels has been a Patriots' assistant for seven seasons, the last two as offensive coordinator. The Patriots had the most productive offense in NFL history this season and are one victory from an undefeated season. But McDaniels announced before the playoffs that he wouldn't interview for any head coaching jobs this year, declining the interview requests of the Falcons and Baltimore Ravens. He's only 31 years old, and it's difficult to know how much credit he deserves for the Patriots' offensive handiwork between the input of Coach Bill Belichick and the self-sufficiency of quarterback Tom Brady.

I don't really see a lot of risk in Snyder and Cerrato waiting. We're talking about a job (NFL Head Coach)that there are only 32 of to begin with and the Redskins have the only opening of those 32. They will still have every opportunity to make the best possible hire by waiting rather than doing so now. The question then just becomes..."Will they make the best possible hire?" ...and only time will tell.

Posted by: Bill | January 25, 2008 10:34 AM

The risk the skins face is alienating all possible candidates. There's no way they can hire Gregg Williams now. And at some point they're going to be picking among coordinators and assistants who are already locked up or are out of football now. They're already unable to hire coordinators from other teams since those are lateral moves.

Posted by: ah | January 25, 2008 10:47 AM

It doesn't matter what Snyder & Co do. So long as Snyder keeps meddling, this organization is doomed.

Does Snyder have a conscience? How can you treat Williams in this manner -- almost tantamount to public humiliation -- and leave the rest of the staff dangling like this?

Why anyone would want the head-coaching job with the 'Skins is puzzling. You'll be handed rotten groceries by Snyder and Cerrato, and you'll have to answer to someone who is impetuous and has demonstrated nothing but incompetence as an organizational manager of a football team.

The "circus" this has become. Ya'll skins got to realize tha your owner mkaes his moves from a "business" point of view and not from "fan" point a view. As long as Snyder continue to be owner the skins will be doomed for years to come believe you me, it gives me much pleasure to see ya'll suffering, especially when the suffering is being inflicted by ya'lls owner.

...Eventually noone will want to be involved and will shune this organization. What Gibbs did is classless to step down like that just cus he couldnt handle the work. He is basially turning his back on the organization, the same organization that made him who he is now...what a shame...he is living the organization in a worst shape and with no direction some legacy , right?

Latest brilliant move. We've narrowed it down to a kid who said he won't interview and a guy with one year of experience as a coordinator, who the Skins easily beat on their home field this year. And there won't be any assistants available by then to boot. This just keeps getting better. Thanks for imploding a once-respected franchise, Danny Boy. It only took you two weeks.

Hey, why don't we just pillage local high schools for a staff. I bet we can have our pick among coaches from Woodson, Herndon, T.C. Williams, etc.

I would like to fill all of my fellow fans in on something regarding Grilliams and his chances of becoming HC.

I actually ran in to him yesterday evening (YES, I really did). I told him how much we diehards want him to be the HC and asked him if he thinks he still has any chance of becoming that...wellll, this is what Grilliams said:

"If I were a betting-man, I would place a hefty wager on me becoming the next HC of the Redskins" as he smiled and got into his car.

I am not here to defend Snyder for his Love-Affair with that doofus Vinny is completely beyond comprehension, but hearing Grilliams say this convinces me of the following:

Snyder wants Grilliams and Saunders but Grilliams REALLY doesn't want Saunders. Therefore Snyder has been interviewing a lot of coordinators that Williams would rather work with. Unfortuantely, none of them have panned out so far. So Snyder knew he should put together a back-up plan in case Grilliams could not put together a regime, so he interviewed Fassel who thought he could assemble an extremely qualified team of coordinators...but as we all know that fell through so far...so what we are left with is Grilliams eventually coming to terms with Saunders or maybe even a coordinator from the Pats or Giants.

This whole process looks like a complete mess and slap in the face to Grilliams from our outside perspective, but in actuality as hard as it is to believe their is some sense and logic behind Synder's decisions the last 2 weeks. Unfortunately, the Post is doing a poor job reporting on it!

Honestly, folks, as much as we all love Gibbs, when he Quit, it was a complete shock to Snyder and the whole coaching staff. In what amount to a football emergency, Synder is doing a decent job trying to patch things up.

Can the Post please report more on the division between Grilliams and Saunders b/c that is the real story here. Until then, No, Boswell, it does Not make sense.

Posted by: Fatbastard | January 25, 2008 12:34 PM

Fatbastard,
So why are they interviewing defensive coordinators?

Posted by: I don't get it | January 25, 2008 12:37 PM

Don't blame Gibbs, leaving to spead time with his family and his 3 year old grandson who has cancer and the fact the guy is 67 and maybe doesn't want to live the rest of his life in his office at Redskin Park giving lipservice to the most ignorant owner in football. He did his job, he righted the ship. It just sucks b/c it only took the dynamic duo 3 weeks to sink it. My only wish is that Gibbs stayed on for 1 year as team president b/c He WOULD have hired G.Williams. Snyder just doesn't know what the word LOYALTY means and Gibbs does. Why do you think he came back in the first place, it was for the money as some would like to think. He's made millions in NASCAR. He came back because he loves the Skins just like we all do.

Posted by: Fire Dan Snyder | January 25, 2008 12:37 PM

I am by no means a Synder fan, but I am surprised by the wrath he has gotten from this process. He is making a huge decision and should be given time to do all of his due diligence. Nobody has been offered the position, so Williams should not feel slighted. In fact, if after all of these interviews Williams is the first choice, he should feel good that he was not chosen hastily, but after considerable thought.

Posted by: BT | January 25, 2008 12:39 PM

Snyder...sell the team

Posted by: John | January 25, 2008 12:40 PM

Posted by: BT | January 25, 2008 12:42 PM

Fatbastard has got a very good point. Even if you didn't hear any comments straight from Williams. Everything that you said would make sense and allow me to believe Dan is doing the right thing. If not and he blows the whole team up. The fuggetabout me going to Fed ex, fuggetabout me buying and Skins gear, I will sit at home and route for my beloved Skins but I will refuse to support The Dan.

Please Please Give Greg Williams the job!

The only common denominator of this Redskins organization's failures ever since is this guy Vinny Cerrato. This guy can not find a real talent. Plus he is a sucker to the Boss Dan.

Doing a little internet research. Taking out the 1999 and 2001 season (Vinny came in late summer of 1999 and was fired by Marty for 2001). The Skins under Danny boy and his yes man Vinny are 12 gams under .500. How in the world can we continue to deal with this incompetence. This may be the final straw to turn me from 30+ years of loyalty to root for another team. My father won't even watch anymore and he has been a fan since it came to DC. I don't want Gregg Williams to be the next coach of the Redskins....as far as I am concerned, he is one of the most overrated folks in the history of this organization. I would be very happy to have Jim Fassel as the next head coach, but I fear he's feeling turned off toward that possibility.

How about Todd Collins as quarterback coach? He knows Al Saunders offense from top to bottom.

Posted by: Sam | January 25, 2008 1:06 PM

Fatbastard, Great points. I agree that the Skins will still name Williams HC. That Fassel and Zorn were both brought in can point to their need at OC.

I think continuity is a great thing, but of more importance is finding the right people to lead it. I support Dan Synder's patience.

Posted by: Mattman | January 25, 2008 1:06 PM

We need to dig up Jack Kent Cooke and restore him as the owner of the Redskins. Let's surround Cooke with a couple of Brazilian Strippers and put him in the owner's box. It would be like old times again. Cooke dead would do a much better job in picking a general manager and coach than Snyder and his loser Scientologist buddies.

I will always love the team, but it has been hijacked by a madman.

"What if the Giants defense--and thus Spagnuolo--has a dud of a performance in the Super Bowl?"

Wrong -- nobody cares. People are falling over themselves to anoint the Pats as the greatest team ever. Just getting to the Super Bowl is an accomplishment for the Giants; therefore, Spagnuolo's rep won't suffer at all even if they get blown out.

"...it's difficult to know how much credit he deserves for the Patriots' offensive handiwork between the input of Coach Bill Belichick and the self-sufficiency of quarterback Tom Brady."

Wrong. Belichick's claim to fame is being a defensive genius. He has little input on the other side of the ball. And as great as Tom Brady is, he's not a coach and can't take credit for the Xs and Os. That leaves McDaniels. Honestly Mark, are you not paid to keep up with this stuff? Oh well, what can I expect from a guy who said earlier that "It looks like Lane Kiffin is really turning things around in Oakland."

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/Is-Kiffin-in-trouble-in-Oakland-already-;_ylt=AgzPfP5xsAyBGUy_Ib9v_NaR2bYF?urn=nfl,63012

As for riskiness, Snyder and company have already screwed things up so bad, there's not much marginal cost in going forward for another couple of weeks. You know what Jim Fassel, all indignant and victimized, is going to do after being "manipulated" by the Skins? Not a damn thing, because NO OTHER TEAM WANTS HIM. He'll still say 'yes' if and when he gets the call because he has no other options.

Posted by: smarter than Mark Maske | January 25, 2008 1:11 PM

The only way for Snyder to get himself out of this mess he created is to just let Gregg Williams go since it sounds like he refuses to work with Cerrato. Promote Greg Blache to Associate Head Coach - Defense and then Promote Joe Bugel to be the the head coach. Sounds crazy but that is the only way to salvage continuity. This is all assuming that Buges will work with Cerrato. This is a huge debacle regardless.

Posted by: aodiesels | January 25, 2008 1:12 PM

"Can the Post please report more on the division between Grilliams and Saunders b/c that is the real story here."

Well I hope your are correct first of all.

Secondly, if this is the case I don't think Williams is too cracked up about this offense and maybe some of those on the offensive side of the ball anyway.

Case in point on one of Portis's many fumbles this year he ccame whining to the sidlines only to be greeted by Gregg Williams. He shooed Portis away and you could read his lips saying "I don't want to hear it."

If he becomes HC, then he should have say in who he wants as his offensive corrdinator I would think.

If you look at my tenure in San Francisco, one might suggest that I had no clue as to what I was doing. That's why Dominatrix Snyder hired me...So the puppetmaster he is could dangle me like the marionette I am. This way, he (aka the mad genius, by the by) could meddle all he wants with his new shiny toy trainset and I could be a pawn taking the brunt of the media attention (for the first five years, at least). And (icing on my cake), I make a very high salary for the level of work I perform (media deflecting dummy)...pretty nice, people. So, I'm sorry you're so jealous.

Posted by: Vincent Cerrato | January 25, 2008 1:26 PM

Saunders is the only rational choice, proven by the Skins performance with Collins executing the offense. Campbell is the future and will improve with every snap. I don't believe "fatbastard" talked to Williams since all the coaches are in Mobile for the Senior bowl. Williams and Saunders can provide the continuity for winning if they both stay, whichever gets the HC.

Posted by: glassishalffull | January 25, 2008 1:27 PM

I wonder how Snyder, in hiring a coach for HIS team, is "meddling". I'd hate to see GW or anyone alienated by this process, but I'm thrilled they're taking their time. Perhaps it is Snyder's previously impulsive and super-decisive nature that has everyone flipping out now. Hurt feelings aside (and they really are beside the point), I'm OK with the process.

Posted by: Michael | January 25, 2008 1:34 PM

As a lifetime Skins fan and season ticket holder, I'm completly Disappointed and Dismayed over the current Head Coach search. When Gibbs was hired four years ago I said to myself "If Gibbs can't get it done then who can?" Well, Gibbs didn't really get it done and now it seems that Snyder has no clue who will either. Hiring Williams would have made the most sense, but he has totally botched that and to even think about hiring Fassel is a huge joke. I'm tired of our team being thought of as a laughing stock through out the league although I drop HUGE coin on them EVERY DAMM year. At least this past season they played a meaningful game in December (barely) It is becoming more and more evident that this team will NEVER return to real prominence until DANNY BOY either sells or the team or he wakes up and lets someone who knows what they are doing actually run the team. As much as I love the organization, they are equally breaking my heart (and my wallet).

Posted by: Petey | January 25, 2008 2:05 PM

Just to answer one earlier comment about Belichick and McDaniels... Yes, Belichick has been a defensive-oriented coach for most of his career. That is his specialty and his reputation. But he has been much, much, much more involved on the offensive side of the operation since Charlie Weis left. The Patriots' offense has been far from being just a Josh McDaniels production. Your characterization of Belichick would have been valid years ago. Now, it is not.

'No one will want to coach this team"

Are you kidding? See Steinbrenner, George. He made Dannyboy look like an amateur, and he never had trouble hiring anybody. There are very few people who wouldn't suck it up for $3 million/year for 5 years. They might even hope they got fired early.

Posted by: groundhogdayguy | January 25, 2008 2:37 PM

What a complete joke. This whole process is absurd. And it lacks any sense of dignity or class. It's clear that the only glue that held this team together the last four years was Gibbs. The second he left, the pre-Gibbs circus returned. And for all those peeps saying it's Snyder's team and he can do what he wants. Right. And your neighbor can paint his house bright pink and put in a fake grass yard. The community would kill him. Well, the Skins are a community. The don't have customers, they have life long supporters. So what Snyder does affects the community. Community. That's why people love the Skins and pay little attention to the Wiz, Caps, United, Nats and so on. But I think with this last bit of bozo activity, Snyder may have finally buried the team and is going to get an eviction notice from the community. I've been a fan since birth and the Skins have been our family team. We're sick to our stomachs and ready to find a team with integrity to follow. To heck with the Skins. Snyder is impossible to support. What a jerk.

I have to hand it to little Danny though - the bugger makes a ton of money for himself and for the league...chaaaachinggg :) Somehow he gets 90K fools (oops..."fans") to pack his stadium for every game and buy his merchandise despite his imcompetence! Posted by: GAM | January 25, 2008 2:57 PM

Fatbastard,

Great Comments above...I've been wondering the same thing myself. I this whole process appears to be so much worse than it really is. Unfortunately, we live in a culture where we all expect answers at all times.

There is no doubt in my mind that Snyder wants GW to be the HC, but the problem is that GW does NOT want Saunders and he also wants to have a lot of say in personell, which he honestly has not earned.

So Folks, relax, Synder wants GW as much as you, but Snyder is trying to find coordinators that would work with him...and if that does not work, who can blame him for having a backup plan in Fossel, Zorn, etc.

I absolutely echo earlier comments that the real story here is the relationship b/w GW and Saunders.

That being said, Vinny Cerrato is a bumbling fool and his promotion is disturbing to say the least.

Posted by: tucansally | January 25, 2008 3:01 PM

Whether or not we assume the word of Fatbastard is true. don't we owe Dan Snyder a little bit of slack, the only direct comment we have from him is that he wants to maintain continuity. Part of the issue surrounds the NFL mandated Rooney rule and part of the issue is (perhaps) that Danny is trying to get it right. Note that no one who has been seeking a head coach has asked, at least as far as the media has reported, to interview either GWilliams or Al Saunders for vacant HC positions. Anybody wonder why????? We don't know if there were back door requests which were turned down, nor do we know what was discussed during the 4 interviews between Snyder and GWilliams. Could be they were planning the next few seasons. While I admit that the "elevation" in status of Vinnie (who must have a very disturbing picture of Dan in his possesion) is very questionable, let's not forget that Gibbs said he was comfortable with the cohesiveness of the three of them in the decision making process. Before we continue the Snyder/Cerrato bashing, let's give them the benefit of the doubt, at least until we hear something specific from Snyder or the (current) coaching staff.

Posted by: SkinzFan | January 25, 2008 3:05 PM

BTW, I've seen GW no less than 10 times since hes been with the skins, usually at the Shell sation off of rt 7 in Leesburg, and friends of mine see him all the time...so its not at all surprising fatbastard said he ran into him.

Posted by: tucansally | January 25, 2008 3:06 PM

If the story of meeting Williams is true, I suspect his response was sarcasm. If on the other hand it was sincere, then what strategic advantage are the Skins gaining by waiting? It probably drives a lot of listeners to the Skins radio station. It may force competitors to overpay their assistants to avoid being raided but what else?

Posted by: JG | January 25, 2008 3:09 PM

It is not Gibbs fault, he assumed that Williams/Saunders would seamlessly assume duties. Snyder, again, appears to be in over his head. Snyder is arrogant and selfish, and really has no business running our team. He could care less about the fans, he just wants total control of this team.

Posted by: Anonymous | January 25, 2008 3:19 PM

This could be our last best chance to get Greg Williams in. If Dannyboy waits and these young assistants say no, then they may have no choice but to go back to Greg Williams. If we could only be so lucky!

Damage Done! HC position certainly does not matter now... Sniderrato has permantently damaged what Gibbs built over the past 4 yrs... GW was certainly the best option to keep progress moving forward but certainly no one (players, coaches or fans) hold their heads up high after the disrespect Snider has displayed here. The sad thing is, it's likely Cerrato's relationship problems w/ GW that prompted this poor decision... Thanks Vinny, way to let politics ruin this franchise... oh, and just wanted to give a BIG THANKS to JOE for leaving us at the right time... there's no hope now and I am converting to purple & gold after 25 years of heart break!

Posted by: I'm Not A Fool | January 25, 2008 4:24 PM

I think Fatbastard brought up an interesting point, regardless of whether or not he actually spoke to Gregg Williams. Have the Redskins actually spoken to any defensive coaches? It seems like the only indication from that has been the media trying to guess who the Redskins next target is. So it is no suprise that Rex Ryan, and Spagnoulo's name came up.

I think the delicateness of the Saunders situation should not be underestimated. Suppose Synder has every intention of hiring Williams, AND both Williams and Snyder would strongly prefer to get rid of Al Saunders...what do they do?

They cannot come right out and say they are searching for an Offensive coordinator, because if they cannot find one, they will have burned their bridge with Saunders and be left with Buges/Breaux and the 1982 Counter-trey. But, if they create this fiction that the whole staff might be changing, it allows them to interview offensive coordinators who might work better with Williams, without Saunders being offended.

This would explain Fassel feeling "manipulated", because according to this thoery that's exactly what happened. If this is true, than I would actually say you have to hand it to Snyder, Jim Fassel was the perfect patsy for this whole thing because NO ONE wants him, and Snyder did not have to risk offending a well-regarded coach or assistant who may one day being a serious candidate.

Posted by: Ben | January 25, 2008 4:24 PM

After going through another agonizing season with this team, fans need to realize that this management team of Cerato and Snyder ar finally leading this team tho the toilet. What assistance are out there that want to lateral for a position of offense and defense coordinator? not many. So that means that whomever your coach is going to be is going to have have slim pickings in picking his assistance at this juncture. Now when your in a position like that, coaches have a tendency to pick their college buddies or friends they grew up with and offer them positions. This division is the most competative in the NFL and to "Bo-Jangle" their way through this procedure is no longer funny. This looks like a depressing 'TWO YEARS OF CRAP' because of ego's and inexperience. Do not think for one minute that this team will be better than 1) New York, 2) Dallas, 3) Philly. The worse is yet to come and it is not the upcoming coaching selection.

Insightful comments, as much as I too have gotten caught up in all of the reporting, friends that are inside of this organization don't know anymore than we do, so how can the Post have all of this information. I would love to bash Snyder as well, and have no idea what he is doing by promoting Vinny, as Vinny is just a YES man to Dan, however, the one thing Snyder has always done, is come out on top in the offseason, so I will give him the time to straighten all of this out, because though we might not all agree with him, the guy is a very smart guy, a great marketer, a fantastic business man, so he is owed the benefit of the doubt that he DOES have a plan here, and that is to make the Redskins a better team, hopefully with GW as the head coach. Gibbs is still in the building daily, and I find it hard to believe that Snyder would go around Gibbs and not even consider Williams atleast for a few years, so all this talk on Saunders and the dislike of his system seems very possible.

what a joke this has turned out to be. compromising the team's stability and progress due to incompetence is snider's trademark so we shouldn't be too surprised. after the ol' ball coach left, no credible coach was willing to come to washington after they saw what snider did to marty. as far as i remember, the whole NYG team quit on JF in his last season there. as far as Spagnola goes, one good season as a coordinator doesn't give us a clear picture of whether or not he could cut it as a head coach. it is basically rolling the dice with him. how long would it take this time around to make it to the playoffs? by the way, the promotion of vinny for doing a "heck of a job" reminds me of the praise brownie received from the president down in NO which we all know was a disaster. snider is a great example of someone with a "napolean complex" who knows nothing about football.

As a life long Redskins fan, I had great trepidation that once Gibbs stepped down, Snyder would inject his poison on this team as he did prior to Gibbs' arrival. Sadly, he now has, but not surprisingly. Gibbs' hire was Snyder's last hope to retain any respect or support from Redskin fans. Today is the beginning of the end for this franchise now that Greg Williams has been snubbed and shamefully released from consideration as the next Redskin coach. Snyder is a franchise killer and Vinny Cerrato is his accomplice. Both deserve each other and the accolades of their destruction.

This is a joke. This franchise is doomed until there is a new owner that stops meddling in his "pet" project. He has not football experience or skills and is not able to lead a football franchise. Now his Exec VP is the idiot that gave us Duckett for two draft picks (40 carries that year), Archeleta (Highest paid safety in history), and Brandon Lloyd (how's that working out)? New owner, a real football GM that builds teams like the ones we see in the playoffs every year, and then get a coach picked by a bonafide football man (GM). What a mess, just about ready to root for my childhood teams in other cities in give up on the local team.

After getting up and reading the article in today's paper about our new OC, Jim Zorn and then reading this entire blog for the first time I would say Fatbastard's scenario is quite possible. Nice job. I met Al Saunders before and he is a nice sincere hard working guy but this offense just hasn't clicked in the past couple of years on consistent basis and it should be the perogitive of the new HC to have a say in who he wants or who he can work with. If there is a rift between GW and AS, I am sure we will here something about it in the next couple of days considering the Post's vast array of well respected reporters. I would like to get Mike Wise's spin on this now that the ship has moved in one direction after being idle for the past few weeks. It would of been nice to have Gibbs remain as president until this whole process was sorted out as I do believe it would of given the Redskins Nation a more greater feeling of comfort and stability then what it has appeared to have taken place since Gibbs made his decision. At the end of the day you have a coach who has the respect of his players and who has produced a consistently rated top 10 defense in the 3 of the last 4 years. Offense may look pretty but it's defense that wins the game for you.

Skins shouldn't wait for Spagnuolo. He's in his first year as a coordinator and not ready for a NFL HC spot, yet.

If McDaniels left the Pats, the rest of the league would be grateful.

Cerrato should go back to college.

Wasn't the point of hiring Gregs Williams in the first place was to promote him to hc when Gibbs retired? Danny boy must be taking advice from another nut case, Tom Cruise.
