Hall of Fame Selection Meeting Under Way
PHOENIX--The Hall of Fame selection meeting began early this morning at the convention center in downtown Phoenix that's serving as the Super Bowl media center.
As always, the voting will take place in several stages. In between votes, the debate among the selectors about various candidates sometimes can be heated. The voters eliminate candidates in tiers of voting, and the final ballot is secret. Even the voters themselves don't know which candidates have made it and which haven't (other than those eliminated before the final vote) when they come to the news conference announcing the enshrinees.
The announcement is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Eastern.
Former Washington Redskins standouts Darrell Green, Art Monk and Russ Grimm are among the 17 finalists. The media members who serve as voters are to select four to seven new Hall of Fame members. The two nominees of the seniors committee, Emmitt Thomas and Marshall Goldberg, are the only two finalists that automatically reach the final round of voting.
