Niners Release Dilfer
The San Francisco 49ers released veteran quarterback Trent Dilfer.
Dilfer made six starts for the 49ers this past season when Alex Smith was hurt. But former third-stringer Shaun Hill played well at the end of the season when he got his starting chance.
The 49ers re-signed Hill to compete with Smith for the starting job and added a quarterback, J.T. O'Sullivan, earlier this offseason.
Dilfer, a former Super Bowl-winning quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, reportedly would have been due a $500,000 roster bonus Saturday.
"Trent Dilfer is a true professional in every meaning of the word," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said in a written statement. "He is one of the most respected players in the league for good reason. Trent has provided great value to our team over the past two years in terms of his leadership, knowledge of the game and play on the field."
