P. Daniels on Upshaw

Jason Reid has gotten these comments from Washington Redskins defensive lineman Phillip Daniels on Matt Stover's effort to overthrow Gene Upshaw as executive director of the NFL Players Association:

"You know, I really don't understand this. I really don't understand what Matt is doing. I saw the letter pop up [on the Internet]. I read it and I still don't understand what Matt is doing. Obviously Matt has some strong feelings. Evidently he feels a certain way about our leadership, but I don't think every player is going to agree with him. I know I don't, and I know a lot of other guys don't.

"Just my opinion, but I think Gene has done a great job for us. I think Gene said it best when he said that the owners are upset [with the labor agreement] because he's done too good of a job. You don't talk about getting rid of someone when they're doing a great job for you; it just doesn't make sense to do that.

"We've got so much going on right now. There's talk of an uncapped year. There's talk of a strike down the road. With all that going on, it's just not the time for something like this. That's just my opinion. I know Troy [Vincent, the former president of the union who has been mentioned as a possible successor] is a real smart guy too, but we don't need change right now."

Upshaw declined to comment, saying that Stover's effort isn't worthy of it.
