Seahawks Appear On Verge of Releasing S. Alexander

The Seattle Seahawks apparently are on the verge of releasing tailback Shaun Alexander, a former league most valuable player.

An announcement could come later today or Wednesday, a person close to the situation said.

The move has been expected for some time. The Seahawks signed tailbacks Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett in free agency.

Alexander was the league's MVP in the 2005 season, when he rushed for 1,880 yards and 27 touchdowns, but he has been far less productive and has been plagued by injuries the past two seasons.

He ran for 716 yards and averaged 3.5 yards per carry this past season.
