Third Round Thoughts

Some picks of interest in today's third round:

* Tailback Jamaal Charles of Texas went 73rd overall to the Chiefs. Kansas City gets a complementary runner to go with Larry Johnson.

* Penn State linebacker Dan Connor goes 74th to the Panthers. Great third-round value for Carolina.

* Wide receiver Early Doucet of LSU is taken by the Cardinals with the 81st choice. Is Arizona readying for the departure of wideout Anquan Boldin, later if not sooner?

* West Virginia tailback Steve Slaton goes 89th to the Texans. That seems a little bit early for Slaton.

* Wideout Mario Manningham of Michigan went 95th to the New York Giants. Some talent evaluators think Manningham has first- or second-round talent. But, according to a report in Pro Football Weekly, he told teams at the NFL scouting combine that he'd never failed a drug test in college, then later wrote a letter informing clubs that he'd failed two marijuana tests at Michigan and had said otherwise at the combine because he'd been nervous and scared. Giants GM Jerry Reese scored last year with his seventh-round selection of tailback Ahmad Bradshaw, who had a troubled past. But this time, Reese is risking a third-round pick.
