Bears Release C. Benson

The Chicago Bears have waived tailback Cedric Benson, who was arrested twice on alcohol-related charges in recent weeks.

"Cedric displayed a pattern of behavior we will not tolerate," General Manager Jerry Angelo said in a written statement released by the team. "As I said this past weekend, you have to protect your job. Everyone in this organization is held accountable for their actions. When individual priorities overshadow team goals, we suffer the consequences as a team. Those who fail to understand the importance of 'team' will not play for the Chicago Bears."

Benson was arrested over the weekend in Texas on a drunk driving charge.

That incident came just more than a month after he was charged with boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

Benson and his representatives have denied the charges in both incidents.

The former first-round draft choice had disappointing results on the field, rushing for 1,593 yards in three seasons with the Bears.

Benson will become an unrestricted free agent if he's not claimed by another team off waivers.
