Speculation That Tyree Could Be Squeezed Off Giants' Roster Is Misguided

There are reports beginning to surface out of the New York Giants' offseason activities that because of the team's surplus of wide receivers, Super Bowl standout David Tyree might not have a guaranteed spot on next season's roster.

The Giants drafted Mario Manningham and have holdovers Plaxico Burress, Amani Toomer, Sinorice Moss and Steve Smith. Tyree made the dramatic catch that set up the game-winning touchdown in the Giants' Super Bowl upset of the previously unbeaten New England Patriots. But he's had a mostly unproductive NFL career as a receiver, leading to the speculation that he could be in trouble at roster cutdown time in the fall.

What the reports ignore, however, is that Tyree wasn't on the Giants' roster for his pass-catching prowess in the first place. He was on the Giants' roster because he's one of the best special teams players in the league. Former Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi used to regard Tyree as one of the top special teams performers he'd ever seen. Coaches create room on the roster for someone like that, so the feeling here is that anyone who doesn't believe that Tyree will be on the Giants' season-opening roster is misguided.

Thank you! Finally someone who knows what they are talking about! Now if you could possibly send this to all of the other reporters talking about this, it would be greatly appreciated!
