Favre Officially Requests Reinstatement
Quarterback Brett Favre has sent his letter to the league office requesting reinstatement.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello acknowledged the league received Favre's letter but indicated that Commissioner Roger Goodell would take no action today.
Goodell previously informed the parties that Favre would be reinstated if he asked.
Favre announced his retirement in March but has indicated in recent weeks that he wants to play this season.
The Green Bay Packers will have 24 hours to add Favre to their roster, or trade or release him, once Goodell reinstates him. Currently, he is on the Packers' reserve-retired list.
If Goodell reinstates Favre Wednesday, the Packers would have until the end of business Thursday to put him on the roster, trade him or release him. They have said they won't release him.
Favre also would have to pass a physical before participating in any practices. The Packers are scheduled to practice twice Wednesday, then have Thursday off before practicing twice Friday.

"Favre also would have to pass a physical . . ."
One imagines that could be one rigorous physical. One thinks back on the movie "Fletch", and one winces at the recollection of Fletch's doctor visit.

The Packers should bring him and bench him. He's a good QB but a lousy person for doing this
Posted by: Dan | July 29, 2008 8:28 PM
Favre has gotten exactly what he wanted. Every one of his previous games of "will he retire" and now his "will he return" games was with the intention of keeping his name as the most discussed in the NFL. What a self centered jerk.

Mr Underhill.....you are wrong!
Dan...you are obviously not a packer fan!
Favre did nothing wrong...Ted Thompson should be fired or traded and Brett Favre should play!!
Brett is a great quarterback and can take us to a superbowl...Rogers...can't! Plus Favre has already given us 16 glorious years....the Packers owe him this!!!
We the Fans Love him!!!

Laura, you are way off. The Packers owe Favre nothing other than the rather huge salary he's gotten all these years. 16 "Glorious" years? I wouldn't call 16 years with only one SB win all that glorious, especially when most of the other post seasons ended with Favre tossing the ball to the other team. Laura, do you know what Brett's post season QB rating is? It's just over 70, which is horid.
Don't you dare attempt to speak for all fans. You aren't a Packer fan you are a Favre fan. No one man is more important than the team.

Bring him to the Chicago Bears, we need a good QB and we are happy to have him!
Yeah!
Posted by: KAM2 | July 29, 2008 9:03 PM
Minnesota will take him, but I think the packers are scared to send him over the river because they know they won't stand a chance if they do. lol!!
Posted by: b-ran | July 29, 2008 9:49 PM
what's your qb rating, jeff? how many "sb's" have you won? what have you done for your community, your employer, all the vendors, marketers, manufacturers, youth foundations, and sports-loving NFL fanatics all over the world on either side of this debate for the past 16 inglorious years of your life?
Posted by: ron | July 29, 2008 10:57 PM
Ron, you're a moron. We're not discussing me here. I wasn't blessed with the talent to play in the NFL. I'm also not the self absorbed prima donna who has been holding his team hostage on an annual basis.
Why don't you make a well thought out argument based on some facts and not emotion? That's the same thin Laura did, post with nothing but emotion.
Sure, Favre had a lot of passing yardage last year, but 52% of his yardage came after the catch. That means those "lousy" receivers that the Packer brass have stuck him with got him most of that yardage. Oh, and only one QB had a higher of their percentage of yardage as YAC yards.
I wish you Favre lovers who claim to be Packer fans would realize that what he's doing (And has been doing every post season for the past 4 years)has been detrimental to the Packers as a team. In what job would you be able to call your boss a liar on national TV three times, badmouth your organization, etc and still expect to be welcomed back? None, no matter who you are.

ESPN reported the Packers have admitted Aaron Rodgers has struggled in practice monday and tuesday. Brett Favre will out play him during pre-season, and management will have no choice but to play the better QB and that will clearly be Brett Favre.

jeff - good one. If by well thought out, you mean over-saturated by media spun statistics, you're right, you win. Emotion has nothing to do with football, sports, enjoyment of a game? Without that, there are no ticket sales, sports rights on the networks and ESPN, no merchandising, no Dan frickin Snyders who pony up big contract dollars for losing seasons year after year from the same loyal to a fault fans. Those like you who always make a business case around sports are exactly the type of people that have corrupted the games we love. Good for you, winner. I'm no pack fan, and certainly don't idolize or idealize any athelete or team, but it does put it all into perspective to read what people like you write about a situation like this.

what's your IQ rating, jeff? by your post, not very high
Posted by: jason | July 29, 2008 11:56 PM
We would love it if Ted Thompson would hit the road. He is not a good fit for Green Bay. The fans do not like him. We don't like Murphy either. How did they ever get here anyway? Roger Goodell should be able to see right through Thompson. He is a bully and should be given his walking papers. With or without Favre, Thompson will not last in Green Bay. He is lucky he was able to sail on the shoulders of Brett last year!

Yeah, put Brett in! Cant wait to see the Monday Night Football tribute to This Gritty Veteran: a few completions (from the archives)/slow motion triumphant wave to the Lamebeau faithful/poignant shot of him presiding over the coin-toss from his wheelchair of billet unobtanium which was donated by a grateful Mike Strahan.
Somewhere in the NFC is a hungry 24y.o. d-Lineman who doesn't know he's in the Nostalgic Foolishness League...

Brett Favre is a God! I also like cheese. Go Packers!!!
Posted by: Mini-Mi | July 30, 2008 12:43 AM
A lot of you have very good points. Yes Brett has only won one superbowl. Yes we have all seen him throw an interception, more than once, at a very high point of a game. And yes we are tired of the will he retire or not year after year. But he has been a the heart of the packers for years. And he doesnt play for the money, if you think that, you are very narrow minded. He has enough money that his great grand kids could live comfortable. I will admit he is over glorified. But that doesnt change the fact that he is a good quarterback. And also u got to remember, we were the youngest team last year and we went pretty far. I didnt expect it, anyone else? And u cant always go by stats.

Jason Asked "what's your IQ rating, jeff? by your post, not very high"
My IQ, whether you care to believe me or not, is 141 and I aslo took a Wonderlic test finisishing well before the alotted time with a perfect score of 50. Don't confuse poor typing skills with a lack of intelligence.
Oh, and since you seem to be worried about these posts YOU might try using capitalization in your posts.

Ron, first off, I'll apologize for the "moron" line, that was uncalled for.
Absolutely, emotion plays a huge part in sports...on THE FAN'S SIDE. However, when running a team, sound business decisions should prevail. What you, and the rest of the "Favre first, Packers second" fans are asking is for the Packers to pull the rug out from under the man they have labeled as the Future of the team after telling him he's the starter. All to allow a soon to be 39 year old QB (One who looked every bit of 38 in his last two games) to come back on a whim. A man who just a couple of months ago said he has nothing left "Emotionally" to play the game. A man who, yes had a good season last year, however the two previous seasons were terrible. Which Favre will show up? '07 Favre, or '05 and '06 Favre? Allowing this to happen will ruin team chemistry for years (Years that Favre will be happily mowing his lawn once he finally does give it up).
As for Favre and what a "Great" person so many folks think he is. He is asking the team to do to Rodgers exactly what he went on national TV accusing them of, Lie. The Team has been very careful of their comments on Brett but he has blasted them at every turn. He recently stated that he would NOT apply for reinstatement until they work out a trade so as not to cause a circus at camp, yet here he comes. He threw one of his best friends, James Campen, under the bus in an attempt to strengthen his argument. Ron, it's prima donna players like this that have gone a long way towards corrupting pro sports.

Wow, who knew that the morons in the head office in Green Bay were so eager to do all they can to alienate their fan base. Thomson is a traitor at best and a moronic fool at worst with no ability to think strategically.
In the end, Favre will regain his freedom and will play for a team that does not go out of its way to dishonour him and trash him in the media.
Green Bay under Thompsons regime of idiocy doesn't deserve Favre, let them keep stepchild Rodgers.

Okay, PackerBackers, what do you really want to see on the field: a trunk of your past, or the seeds of your future?
Posted by: redlineblue | July 30, 2008 10:16 AM
Normally in player management disputes, my first inclination is to support the player.
However, what GM or coach can produce an effective team if players in key positions are unreliable. I'm sure the Green Bay organization would like to be focusing on other issues than the content of their QB roster at this time.
Favre had at least one opportunity to un-retire, on which he reneged. His ambivalent display proves is that he is a selfish, narcissistic cog, who has little respect for the players, management or the fans.
One of his biggest problems is that he has not prepared himself for retirement. He apparently has developed no alternative career options. So this spring, when all his buddies were revving up for the season, he was home board while riding his lawn mower.
The pitiful part is that Brett is not an outstanding QB. Up to now he has been well liked, but marginally effective. I'm sure he is competitive. However his best claim to fame has been his longevity. Indeed, he has proved himself to be erratic and undisciplined on the field. Because of this, on most other teams he would have been gone long ago. In the long run, I'm convinced that the GB football family will be better without him.
Come to think of it, maybe the best thing for Brett to do is to start a lawn care business. It seems that he may have some training in that area.

Brett was a great Quarterback and great team leader and that is what he is forgetting. His teams together have made him what he is . That is proven everyday of our lives no one person is a success on his own and when that one person forgets that, the game is over.I feel very sorry for his team they have been let down ,they need to come together and they will succeed without him.I feel sorry for Brett, he will have great reget in the future about letting his team mates down, all the money won't take that hurt away .

I have been a Packer fan for over 30 years. It is very hard to know what the Packers should do. I feel for both sides. I do believe Brett just wants to play ball, and he still can. He came off a tough game last season and didn't give it enough time before making the big decision. I don't think we should hold that against him. I will never beleive he is doing this for the attention. It is the media that makes the rumors fly. I know the team can't keep waiting season after season to see what he is going to do, but this was very poorly handled. I know it takes a whole team to win a game but Farve has done a great job for us, that he has earned our respect and a second chance, not on the the bench but at least a chance to fight for the starting role. People who call him names have not taken the time to get to know the real Farve. He still is a ountry hick at heart who wants to play football. Play him or release him. He's earned it!

I've been a Packer fan all my life. For those who appear to be "anti-Brett", a Green Bay Packer refresher coarse is available in Wikipedia. Pay special attention to the approximate 25 years before Brett came on the scene. The majority of the memories during that time period are enough to make me cringe.
They say Brett's too old to be the Packers starting QB?
Don't think so, or the Packers management would have released him. Too much of a future threat.
Brett is causing problems for the Packers "team spirit"?
Could have been avoided if the Packers management would have let him start, or released him. Management carries the brunt of that fiasco.
Whatever happens with Brett, I wish him well...both in present negotiations, and in life. We all should - for all the good times he's given us.
