Favre Situation Has to be Settled By Week's End, Doesn't It?

The Packers are scheduled to report to training camp Sunday and practice for the first time Monday.

The guess here is that team officials will find a way to settle the Brett Favre situation before camp opens.

The Packers wouldn't accomplish much this summer amid the carnival atmosphere that leaving the Favre matter unresolved would create.

Settling it likely would mean trading Favre or getting him to agree to abandon his comeback, since it seems unlikely that Favre would return to the club as a backup quarterback (even for a $12 million salary).

People around the league still are guessing that if Favre is traded, it will be to Tampa or Carolina. Someone mentioned Oakland to me as a possibility, but I have a tough time believing that Favre would come out of retirement to play for the Raiders.

Maybe he'll just stay retired if he and the Packers can't agree on a team to which he can be traded. There's no indication that the Packers will relent and allow him to go to Minnesota or Chicago.

The Farve situation seems to be a lose-lose for everybody. I think Green Bay should just suck it up and take him back as the starter. A good QB is hard to find and Farve is a once in a generation QB for that franchise. He gives them a good shot to make the playoffs again. They drafted a few QBs this past year. They should just trade Aaron Rodgers to a place where he can compete for a starting spot and just ride this season out with Farve.

As someone who lives in Wisconsin (but only recently, so I'm not a massive fan)...

Apparently some of this appears to be a personality issue, too. The GM is not overly fond of Brett and wants him gone and has not made it comfortable for him. (Remember, there's no owner to keep this kind of stuff to a minimum - it's a publicly owned team.)

But the fact is they drafted this year based on a Brett-less team. And gave him an opportunity to come back before the draft and he turned it down. People are torn out here - they love Brett (actually, they worship him), but they don't all think it's fair to the team or the fans for Favre to keep changing his mind.
