Giants Agree to Trade Shockey to Saints

The Jeremy Shockey trade is done.

The New York Giants have agreed to trade the tight end to the New Orleans Saints for second- and fifth-round draft picks next year.

Shockey leaves the Giants after six seasons and 371 catches. He was selected to four Pro Bowls but his relationship with the Giants deteriorated in recent months and he reportedly got into a yelling match with General Manager Jerry Reese at a June minicamp.

The trade reunites him with Saints Coach Sean Payton, his former offensive coordinator with the Giants.

Why would the Giants make this trade? Cap room, they believe Boss will be better, Shockey's health, all of the above? Regardless, I believe Boss won't be nearly the passing threat as Shockey and love the Giants weakened their team today. Hail Skins.

Shockey is the football equivalent of Alex Rodriguez. All stats, no championship. He's injured, the Giants go on a championship run for the ages. The last time they had the chance, they were run over by the Forty-niners, blowing a 25-point lead that would have been more, had Shockey not dropped an easy touchdown pass in the end zone and, because his team seemed to be routing SF, he laughed at the gaffe. Now he can split his ribs in Floodville. Glad to see him go. Boss's catch and run in the Super Bowl showed the kind of character Shockey lacks.

I wouldnt have gotten rid of Shockey, unless I thought he could never come back from the injuries. In the NFL, you can never say that for sure, just look at Fred Taylor last year.

Shockey is a guy who seems to be slowing down due to injuries. He isn't that old but is not nearly the threat he was down the field 2-3 years ago.

The Saints sure are in a 'go for broke' in 2008 mentality aren't they?

This trade happened for one reason - Eli Manning. Shockey was such a distraction to Mannings leadership, the one guy who undermined it. It would have been best for the Skins if Shockey had stayed, as this would have continued the locker-rom disarray and leadership conflicts. Instead, good move by Giants but bad for Skins. Giants just got MENTALLY tougher and more cohesive. Crap.

Stat-wise - Shockey can play. Attitude wise - he's full of himself, and I guess the Giants had enough. A better deal though than the Skins deal for Jason Taylor, who is older and on the tail end of his career. So, a great trade for the Giants, and maybe the Saints can get Shockey to tone it down. Back on the Taylor trade - Snyder needed help on the D-Line, and he gets a marquee player again - remember merchandising is first - winning is sauce for the golden goose.
