Key NFL Question No. 5: Who's the Class of the NFC?

My thoughts:

The Cowboys.

Yes, they have their issues. Quarterback Tony Romo's mostly solid season was undone by the furor over his vacation that preceded last season's playoff loss to the Giants. Terrell Owens remains a threat to create controversy at any moment. The passing game could be one wideout shy if Terry Glenn does not recover from his knee woes. The defense hasn't become the dominant unit that it probably should be, given the resources that the Cowboys have poured into it. Coach Wade Phillips, more than ever, has been left vulnerable to having his authority usurped by offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.

But this nevertheless remains the most dynamic offense in the NFC, and the defense could become more consistent and overpowering in Phillips's second season. The Cowboys drafted well, and they again should be the conference's most balanced and complete team.

The Giants will challenge as they attempt to defend their Super Bowl title. But the Brett Favre mess has undermined the Packers' potential to take over as the NFC's top team, and the Cowboys are well positioned to complete what they started but didn't finish last season.

Blah, blah, Cowboys. Wade Phillips whimpering after losing to the Giants, "The best team lost." Tony Romo leaving the best of his game in Cancun, deep inside Jessica Simpson. An aging offensive line. An "all-pro" safety who can't cover or tackle.

Whatever. You could get a job at ESPN with a pick like that.

Look at the NFC, and look at the playoff teams that win......playoff games. Pick you "class" from there.

Dallas probably has something like 200 games played without a playoff win. That's insane.

Yeah, I see Dallas self destructing. They'll be on fire early in the season, everyone will love them. They'll peak around week 12/13;

Don't know who the team will be but, we're going to have a team surprise us to represent the NFC this season.

(and yes I'm a skins fan and dallas hater, but I know it wont be the skins)

I guess if something is repeated often enough it becomes true. Dallas' offense was electric without the benefit of Terry Glenn. Dallas is balanced and Crayton is a strong complimentary receiver and works in our offense. With Witten catching 80 balls Dallas doesn't need another person whinning for more catches.

I'd love to know how Dallas' offensive line is aging? Except of Flozell Adams nobody is over 30 and there's quality (young) depth. Roy Williams didn't have a stellar year last season but I would take him over anybody who stepped on the field for the Skins at safety in the past ten years.

If we can get past the first round, we're going to Super Bowl. Who in the NFC has mor talent?

Omar: I know he's no longer with us. But, just so I understand. You're not saying you would have taken R. Williams over Sean Taylor are you?

Posted by: Dylan | July 14, 2008 5:54 PM

Roy Williams can no longer play dead. He was AWFUL last year.

Flozell Adams is 33.
Gerude is 30.
Kosier is 30 in Nov.
Leonard Davis is 30 in Sept.
Columbo is 30 in Oct.

Omar...

Wow, you'd take Roy Williams over Sean Taylor or LaRon Landry? I thought I was a homer.

Posted by: hobbes9 | July 14, 2008 6:08 PM

Mark - what kind of numbers do you see Marion Barber getting this year?

# of carries, rushing/receiving yds/tds?

Posted by: Question | July 14, 2008 6:11 PM

He was awful last year. That O-line is aging. But, they have a good year or two left, unfortunately. I think Dallas might be the most talented team in the NFC. But, I just think there's two much drama there. With Phillips/Garrett, T.O., and Romo hasn't shown that he can bring it when the chips are down.

Posted by: Dylan | July 14, 2008 6:11 PM

Good point hobbes9.I forgot about Landry.

Posted by: Dylan | July 14, 2008 6:17 PM

The NFC is wide open the Giants will be scrutinized by the NY media to the enth degree. Green Bay had better trade Farve or they are looking at a divided locker room with Aaron Rodgers looking over his shoulder, the Cowboy's have talent and should have a chip on their collective shoulder's if Wade doesn't win now..... My Skins have some question marks O line, Reed Doughty, D line, Jason, and last but not least Jim Zorn. Seattle could surprise but i doubt it. St. Louis could be a darkhorse they had a good draft but the new and old testament(Al Saunders playbook) may sabotage the offense. My pick Philly vs. San Diego in the Super Bowl. Oh YEAH the Skins will make the playoffs(wild card).

dargremag. I'm on board with most of what you say here. Except for 2 things. Philly hasn't added enough offense to get to the Super Bowl and Mc Nabb will never get back there without an infusion of seriously talented receivers. Second, and maybe I just haven't heard this. But are there a lot of Packers demanding that Favre return? I don't see that. I think they'll play for Rodgers. If the Pack had just kicked him to the curb, it might be different. But Favre left them.

Deadskins will be competing for taking the first player in the next NFL draft. Be lucky to win 3 games. Coaching drama the Deadskins have it with a head coach who had a staff already in place. And come on with the year Danny Boy is having wouldnt be surprised if the Deadskins dont suffer some weird injuries maybe a decapitation or two from players riding the cart.

I think the Dallas Cowboys will once again be the at top of nfc. But there are other teams that can be a surprise. The surprise teams can be Cardinals, Rams, Vikings, Eagles, Redskins. If Dallas can get some momentum going into the playoffs then I think they might go far (i hope they don't). The Redskins need to solve some issues which are beasically holding them back. First things first, J.Campbell better show up this season, second the O-Line needs to stay healthy and the defense needs to be able to protect leads. If the skins can fix these issues they will surprise a lot of people. But in conclusion its going to be a dog fight in the NFC East and Dallas should'nt get too easy, because if they do they will pay for it.

Last postseason Cowboys win? Super Bowl XXX. They will not win with Jerry's Kids. Look out Cowboy's fans, as soon as the suspension is up, Chris Henry coming soon to Cowboy Stadium! When is Jerry Jones going to get enough heat to step aside on running the show?

Wow, might be the dumbest comment of the day on all WaPo message boards. I think there may be 1 Redskin safety who I wouldn't take over Roy Williams in the last 10 years. Sean Taylor, Laron Landry, Ryan Clark all light years ahead of Williams. I'd even take Ifeanyi Ohalete, Reed Doughty, and Mark Carrier over Roy Williams. The only guy RWilliams gets a vote of confidence over is Adam Archuleta, who in my mind are neck and neck in overall quality. Just wait until Santana torches Roy Williams this season...again.

Who cares? It's all about who's playing the best football down the stretch. The Giants were not the class of the NFC, but look what happended. The Skins were 5-6 and look what happended.

I think the Cardinals could be a sleeper.

Posted by: sicwidit | July 15, 2008 8:24 PM

Omar you are delusional. If the Cowgirls couldn't get it done with 12 Pro Bowlers last year, then what makes you think it will get better this year? Only two names matter there, Wade Phillips and Tony Romo. Lifetime 0-for-the-playoffs between them. And the fact that you think R. Williams is better than Sean Taylor or LaRon Landry, both of whom can/could cover and tackle unlike Williams, shows how qualified you are to judge.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 16, 2008 1:28 PM

I think Barber will be a 1,200-yard rusher with plenty of TDs. It's tough to say about his catches until we see how the playing time will be divided and how often he'll be on the field in passing situations.

Posted by: Mark Maske | July 16, 2008 2:27 PM

Yep, I would take him over Sean Taylor and LaRon Landry. Before his sad and untimely death Sean Taylor was close to surpassing Roy in my mind. That half season last season by Taylor was as good and as dominant as Roy's best season and I thought Taylor was only going to get better as he better understood the pro game. The season's before that were hit and miss with Taylor. I've seen him get abused by wideouts (the aforementioned Patrick Crayton for example) just as often as making a big play. There were times in previous seasons when he looked like he had no idea what was going on.

Roy Williams is still making over 100 tackles a season even in a down year Don't believe the media inspired hype about Roy Williams coverage weaknesses. Most people have no idea what defense was called or who's responsible for what. They just blame the person that's in frame when the play happens. He's not a corner and honestly how many strong safeties match up against wideouts and athletic tight ends successfully on a consistent basis? None.

Let's be clear, Roy wasn't good last year. Color me not impressed with Landry. I don't think he's that special. The rest of the players psps23 named are a bunch of has beens and never weres.
