Patriots Sign Pair of Third-Rounders

The New England Patriots have announced the signings of two third-round draft choices, linebacker Shawn Crable and quarterback Kevin O'Connell.

Crable was selected 78th overall in April and O'Connell was picked 94th.

The defending AFC champions have their first practice of training camp scheduled for Thursday.

O'Connell is the interesting pick here. I'm not sure what the plan is but the Pats have 4 QBs now. The number 2, Cassel, was uninspired in very limited play last year while the rookie free agent Gutierrez looked great in exhibition play. I also doubt either Gutierrez or O'Connell would slip through to the practice squad (although I'm not quite sure of the rules here). Maybe Cassel gets a lot of reps in pre-season with the Pats looking to trade him for a pick in the 3rd or 4th round. This is his last year under contract, I believe. A Belickick-Brady understudy must be attractive to a number of QB poor teams.
