Saints Trying to Complete Shockey Trade

The New Orleans Saints are attempting to complete a trade for New York Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey, an NFL source said.

The Saints have been in pursuit of Shockey since before the NFL draft in April but the two teams have been unable to agree to draft-choice compensation. Still, the source said the Saints remain interested and are at work on the potential swap.

Shockey was hurt during the Giants' run to a Super Bowl title and was replaced in the lineup by then-rookie Kevin Boss. There is some feeling around the league that Eli Manning's maturation as a quarterback during the postseason was aided by Shockey's absence.

The proposed deal would reunite Shockey with Saints Coach Sean Payton, formerly the offensive coordinator of the Giants.
