Visit to Favre Could Be Blunder By Packers

According to reports by media outlets in Wisconsin, Green Bay Packers President Mark Murphy has traveled to Mississippi to meet with quarterback Brett Favre and his agent, Bus Cook.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported that Murphy will ask Favre not to show up for the Packers' training camp.

If that report is true, the Packers could be making a major blunder.

Under NFL rules, the Packers cannot prevent Favre from playing if he wants to play. They can reinstate him to their roster. They can trade him. They can release him. But they can't make him stay home.

And if they do--or perhaps even if they just try--the NFL Players Association could file a grievance on Favre's behalf. The union perhaps could ask an arbitrator to make Favre a free agent. Maybe this is the way that Favre gets to his apparently chosen team, the Minnesota Vikings.

The union has a precedent, a previous case in which the Tennessee Titans tried to keep quarterback Steve McNair from working out as their facility during the offseason. McNair, also represented by Cook, ultimately was traded by the Titans to the Baltimore Ravens.

Presumably, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will reinstate Favre today. If he does, the Packers will have until the close of business Thursday to put Favre back on their roster, trade him or release him.

I am soooooooooo tired of the Brev Farte story ... he is detracting from the Hall of Fame ceremonies and coverage when the media should be talking about Darrell Green and Art Monk ... I hope Farte has a career-ending injury on the first play of the first game!!!!!!

Maybe now the refs won't call the game in his favor and be fair to all the opponents that play against Favre.

I hope he ends up in Minnesota and we kick his ass and keep them from making the playoffs -- like we did last year!! Ha ha ha!!!!!

No-good stinking Vikings!!!!!

Posted by: rb | July 30, 2008 12:38 PM

What makes then think that they're asking him to stay home? It could be any number of things they're talking about. I agree, let's stop talking about Favre and talk about Monk & Green.

Reminder, there's a story on Art Monk this Friday on CSNDC, 9 pm.

Mark,

This is too much info. Something else, please. No more Favre stuff.

Posted by: enuffalready | July 30, 2008 12:46 PM

Packers are lame as they should just cut, release or trade him. Problem with NFL is that they are a monopoly so they can pretty much do what they want. We all change our minds, so let Favre do what he wants to which is not play for the Packers as they pretty much nixed him but you can't keep him from not playing. Hope the packers come in last and croak!

What do the Packers have to do - shoot Brett Favre in the head on live TV before some of you get the picture here? ALL Favre ever did was change his mind about playing. ALL the rest of this insanity - EVERY BIT OF IT, is on the Packers. They're acting like a bunch of tweaked up escapees from the stupidest reality show you've ever seen, and STILL the sports "media" is covering for them. What the heck!?!

And they say Favre is waffling?!?

Thompson - "We will welcome Brett back if he reinstates in some sort of different role".

Thompson - pleads with Brett to stay away from camp for a couple days, the proceeds to get nothing done.

Favre stays away for two days then sends in his reinstatement papers.

McCarthy - "Brett is still a very good football player and will be welcomed back in our locker room"

2 hours later - Murphy is on a plane to Hattiesburg begging Favre not to show.

It's starting to seem like some sort of farcical old time, silent western, with all the overacting and amateurish script. Will someone please explain to me why the Packers are going through all this absurd nonsense to keep the best quarterback they've ever had, who's at the top of his game, from coming back and helping their team make another serious run for the Superbowl?

God this is idiotic!

Posted by: TeriB | July 30, 2008 1:10 PM

What are the Pacekrs so afraid of? Having to pay Brett his $13 million for nothing? Then why don't they let him compete for his job? The Packers want their best players to be on the field correct? The best team? Why are the Packer managers' heads TOO BIG in this whole situation? Welcome back, Brett! The Packers need you!

Compare the odds of Rodgers bringing the Pack to the playoffs versus Favre.

Bring him back, let him start.

Posted by: Go Pack | July 30, 2008 1:31 PM

I say we just leave it to Donald Driver, our #1 reciever.

By the way, TeriB - You are 100% correct on your analysis... Why can't others see that its the Packers decision makers and the media that is the problem, not Favre?

I believe if Bob Harlan was still the CEO, none of this would of happened... It would of been taken care of quickly and profesionally behind closed doors. More than likely Favre would still be starting too.

Unitis, Jordon, Woods, Montana, Gretzky, Ruth, etc. Each generation seems to be blessed with the opportunity to tell their children about a rare individual in the sports world that for their moment in history, captured the attention of a nation. For the past decade, Favre has been one of those gifted few. I'm sure many are willing to debate who may be the greatest QB ever. Many will naturally say Montana because he has the most Super Bowl rings. Others would say Marino because of his records. And Elway rightfully enters the conversation based on both criteria. Brady also appears destined to make the list, along with Manning.
However, I don't believe without the aid of google, many readers could easily identify who has won the most World Series, the most Stanley Cups, or the most NBA championships. It was surely not Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretzky, nor Michael Jordon. And yet we generally consider them to be among the greatest to have played in their respective sports. For this reason, every major QB record, a Super Bowl ring, durability, and certainly his love of the game, Favre has earned the right to be considered part of this debate.
So in this era of athletes routinely holding out on their contracts for more money, others charged with illegal drug use, DUIs, domestic abuse, gun violations, spitting on referees, punching fans, etc, why would we be anything but supportive of an athlete who has shown nothing but respect for his sport and his fans, and a relentless love to play, simply because he made the horrific mistake of choosing to retire before his burning desire to play has been completely extinguished.
Yes, the audacity to quit while you're still capable of playing at a level nearly no other QB will ever achieve, and then realize you miss it too much to stay away. Meanwhile we continue to welcome back the criminals to this, and every sport, that should not only be denied the right to play, but as well the right to freely walk the streets. Instead, many have chosen to charge Favre with causing trouble, being a diva, causing a media drama. Well, I don't believe he initially called any press conferences. He sent a simple text message expressing his desire to play a game his father taught him to love. The media, not Favre, has created the frenzy. He suggested in as unassuming way possible he would like to rejoin his team. When they turned their back on him, something he has never done to them in 275 straight games, he was left to ask for a release as the only option other than forgoing his desire to continue his brilliant career. Just how negatively can this be looked upon in comparison to what has become the all too unfortunate realty in professional sports? For those determined to diminish sports heroes, you need only turn the channel to the likes of Clemens, Bonds, and the litany of others facing charges. We even have an entire multi Super Bowl winning team accused of cheating, and yet they're jerseys continue to sell........ Of these debates, we can leave Favre out, he has done nothing wrong. Now I certainly expect everyone deserves their opinion on the matter, but does this issue really warrant the anger, and name calling hostilities we so frequently see posted? Imagine any one of us having enjoyed a long productive career as one of the best in our respective positions, and then retired only to find we felt a void needing to be refilled. Then, upon returning to your former employer who praised your accomplishments, you are told; we not only do not want you back at this point, we no longer want you to be allowed to pursue work anywhere else as well.
So rather than attempt to explain to my young kids why various convicts are making millions each Sunday, while we sit in front of our TV, I for one can only hope I can put my arm around them and point to number 4, and say, "anything you choose to do in life, do it with that kind of joy and love. THAT is how football is meant to be played. Watch closely, you wont soon see anyone like him again."
Lace em up again Brett......you deserve it, and so do we.

Thank you TeriB and Mike for insightful comments.
As for you, rb, do you know what a despicable person you come off as wishing injury on another human being? We're talking about professional football here where people can be paralyzed or even killed.

Watch the footage of Kevin Everett's injury before you go shooting your mouth off, wishing another's destruction -- especially when the only thing that guy did "wrong" was change his mind and want to play again.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHINING THAT YOU'RE SICK OF READING ABOUT BRETT FAVRE, THEN STOP READING! You have to be pretty mentally challenged to keep readings stories you're not interested in.

This is hilarious! Ted Thompson says he has no ego and that the stalemate is not due to him. He seems to think he personally is bigger and better than one of the greatest quarterbacks ever. He is in a no win situation if he really thinks the Packers are better without Favre than with him. Ted Thomspon seems to be a control freak and Mike McCarthy seems like a mere puppet.

The playoff game against Seattle last year by the way was great! Although any Packer fan could feel Brett's starined relationship with the management over at least the last couple years, after the Seattle game, all Packer fans celebrated the victory with the entire team, including Brett, Thompson and McCarthy. What a great feeling!

And now, it is a real shame that Thompson is the one who is trying to ruin Brett's legacy by making it clear to Brett that he can be a back up at best. Thompson cannot publically say this though. He has McCarthy and others come out and do the dirty work for him. One of the greatest quarterbacks of all time is not even allowed to compete for his position? How good will this Packer team be when players are not allowed to compete for a role because the menagement's heads are too big? BOOO TO YOU THOMPSON!!! Packer fans are not stupid! This is all about your disrespecting one of the Packer greats of all time. The Packer Hall of Fame is a truly inspirational place where Brett is already recognized. Thomspon, why are you trying so hard to put an a football end to it all for Brett?

Posted by: Mark | July 30, 2008 1:35 PM

There is two sides to this saga. The Packers decided they needed to move on with Aaron Rodgers as their staring QB. But, on the other hand, it's BRETT FAVRE!!! The greatest player to ever touch a pigskin! How do you tell Favre No? I do hope he finds a winning team if it's not in Green Bay. I will still support him no matter what!!! Keep playing three time MVP!!! I wish you the best!!!

Posted by: andy davis | July 30, 2008 1:37 PM

Posted by: RM | July 30, 2008 1:37 PM

Favre is a legend. I want favre to play

Posted by: Jonathan | July 30, 2008 1:38 PM

Nonsense, why do all the reporters assume to know so much,... talk about fabricating stories,... I grew up in Wisconsin listening to better fishing story lies than this story! If he wants to play the Packer management is simply foolish in the way they have handled this story,... get a clue media press and Packer management - "the more you lie and fabricate these stories about team issued phones, tapes, threats of being fired if Brett shows up - the more I lose faith in you all to just tell the truth! What can be gained by looking so stupid coach? Why do you think you are so wise Packer Management when you obviously look so idiotic? Play, trade or release the man so he can provide us all with the entertainment the NFL (No Fun League) is suppose to be about...!!!???
My belief is that the same greedy decision making policies that the NFL went through to take the NFL channel away from my cable carrier (Time Warner) is ruining the big time showing opportunity to have Brett Favre back. Get a clue NFL!!!!
Punish the cheaters (New England Patriots) not the champions (MVP Brett Favre)!!!!!!!!

Posted by: NFL8daysaweek | July 30, 2008 1:41 PM

The Packers have said many times that Favre is welcome back, but as a BACKUP to Rodgers. Rodgers is the starter no matter what Favre thinks he is going to do.

Posted by: Tim | July 30, 2008 1:47 PM

Thank you brett favre for pulling a Michael Jordan. I say they reinstate him, but make him wear a different number, just to be difficult.

Posted by: Your Mother | July 30, 2008 1:47 PM

Why not just let the crybaby go!

There are "many" young quarterbacks fresh off the college rolls or perhaps walking the streets that can easily take his place if given the chance. He "is not" the great white hope that all you who worship him, would have us believe.
The Pack "moved-on" when he said he was "retiring", now Bret needs to quit being like a confused woman on prozac and move on. They have already found a "new" Quarterback. Let him have his chance. Bret had his glory.

Posted by: nicdilla | July 30, 2008 1:47 PM

There sure are a lot of IDIOTS posting. Favre IS RETIRED, can't you get that through your heads. That was months ago also, and back then they told Rodgers he was the starter.

Or is that too hard for you to comprehend?

Posted by: Tim | July 30, 2008 1:49 PM

All this story has done is brought to attention how many idiot "fans" there are out there. IF YOU ARE SICK OF THE STORY, DON'T READ IT, IDIOTS.

Or keep your mouth shut until you become a world class athlete because you have no idea what you are talking about. You are just jealous because someone has actually gone out and accomplished something in their life, while you are reduced to ripping on other peoples' lives. Live with that, idiots.

Posted by: FanForever | July 30, 2008 1:53 PM

Wow, don't know who rick is, but that was excellent!

Posted by: MJS | July 30, 2008 1:55 PM

Favre is reinstated, you idiot. Maybe you don't know how to read.

Posted by: Tim is an idiot | July 30, 2008 1:55 PM

Farve has a right to come out of retirement if he so chooses, however his loyalty to the packers is above reproach. But if he has to change teams to keep playing, would this enhance his career stats? Maybe, maybe not!
Brett, perhaps your decision to retire was the right one...perhaps God has something else he wants you to do! Think about it.

Posted by: Ted | July 30, 2008 1:55 PM

Why doesn't Brett sit down with Aaron Rogers and and ask him if he wouldn't mind sitting on the bench in exchange for at least 20% of Brett's remaining contract. Rogers could be one of the highest paid bench warmers in the NFL and not have to worry about getting injured on the field. Heck, if I was Brett, I'd offer Rogers at least 25% of my remaining contract just so I could play.
If Brett offered Aaron this package and he agreed to it, this would then relieve any pressure on the Packers Staff as to explaining why Brett is now their starter. They could just tell the media that Brett and Aaron worked out a deal on the side and that the organization fully supports their decisions. This would take the spotlight off Ted, Mike, and Mark.
Favre did in the past fore go money just so some of his teammates could be paid what they deserved.
Just an idea is all.

Posted by: gbfan | July 30, 2008 2:09 PM

Favre will probably end up with the Vikings, and won't it be funny to watch all the Packers fans gnash their teeth when Minnesota take the NFC?

Posted by: Polarbearmm | July 30, 2008 2:11 PM

Rodgers is a good QB and has proven that he can compete with the best as long as he doesn't get hurt. Rodgers himself did admit that he injures easily. The Packers should keep this in mind when deciding Favres fate. One good hit to Rodgers and it's all over. Then what??

Posted by: gbfan | July 30, 2008 2:16 PM

i've been a packer fan since i was twelve and bart starr was the qb. favre has served them for years head and shoulders above the rest and he still has the stuff. if they don't start him or release him,i will burn my packer stuff. if he's good enough to be feared playing for another team, then he's good enough to start.

Posted by: jeepguy3721 | July 30, 2008 2:21 PM

Rick,

Thanks to you, there is nothing more to say regarding this topic. Not only is your overall opinion well rounded and diplomatic, but you truly illustrated your case on a level that can not be contested.

For the obtuse, slobbery and closed minded ignoramuses out there that have so elegantly listed their opinions utilizing violence, profanity and third grade English, how could any human being relate to your opinions? Wait... I know, they would have to share the same adolescent negativity and trashy lack of respect for others around them as you do. Make sure you close your trailer door before you respond!

As Rick stated, I don't care where Favre plays, as long as he plays. He is the most admirable professional athlete that I have seen in my lifetime.

Posted by: Roy | July 30, 2008 2:27 PM

The Packers traded Brett Favre, Scott Favre and agent Bus Cook to the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL.
Stay tuned for very ill timed and dumb 4th quarter interceptions.

Perhaps this is "just rumor." - like Favre said at the beginning.

Posted by: packfan | July 30, 2008 2:28 PM

Thanks to Rick, Mark, and Teri B (and all the other true Packer fans) - you said it all, and very well too.
This game is ultimately about winning. You need the best players to accomplish this. Every other player on the team has to compete for his position so why should QB be any different? May the best QB play this season!

Posted by: Sandy | July 30, 2008 2:28 PM

Kudos goes to Rick on a well written statement!
Excellent!!

Posted by: gbfan | July 30, 2008 2:35 PM

Favre & Reggie White were the best dynamic pair that brought the Pack big time money. Prior to the '96 season you couldn't find Packer hats, shirts outside of Wisconsin. I've since moved to the West Coast. Pre-Favre no packer stuff in any store out here. Thanks to the personality of Favre and his greatness as a football player - I can walk into Wal-Mart and buy a packer hat, t-shirt etc. The Packers are foolish not to welcome Favre to compete for the Quarterback position. Think of the press that would bring the Pack. The masses would be watching every Packer game all season! Why do you think the Packers have played so many Monday Night games, etc? With Bret Favre the Packers have become "Americas Team" Sorry Cowboys. Bring Brett Favre to Green Bay & let him play for the Pack.

Posted by: GB Hometowner | July 30, 2008 2:44 PM

I too need to give alot of respect to rick,
I'm not sure what is going on with the world today.....many people are worshiping at the feet of criminals who get paid an insane amount of money to be bad role models for all the kids nowadays.
And than there was Bret Farve.....oh and by the way if you cant spell his name right you probably should not be posting!!!
This man is one of the greatest to play his position. And although you can argue numbers all day compared to elway, montana, etc etc the truth of the matter is that his heart and love of the game is right at the top of the list. Now i want everyone to know this next part because it plays a significant part in all of this......I am a BEARS FAN........always have been, always will be. But i respect what Farve has done for the game and admire his work ethic and presence on the field.
Wouldnt it be funny if he didnt go to the Vikings and instead went to the Bears?
Farve passing to the greatest return man and soon to be wide reciever in the game.......(That would be Devon Hester for all you out of the loop)
Now that would be a kick in the pants!!!!

Posted by: Jack Handy | July 30, 2008 2:53 PM

All of this is nonsense, its all about MONEY, I bet they are paying Arod half the price they were paying Brett. The mangenment their should step back and think "what goes around comes around" do they really think that the GOOD players they NOW have their will resign with them after the way they have treated the greatest player they have ever had to walk on their field.I hope that TT and MM and MM get their pockets full this year because I bet the whole bunch will be fired before all this is over with. Go Brett Go, find you a winning team so you can get another superbowl ring. Shame on the Green Bay packers for NOT surrounding Brett with great players all those years he was there. I hope Brett sticks it to them in every direction. I hope that he goes to the Vikings and whips the pants off of ARod. I have been a Packer fan all my life since I was 7 years old, this is the first time I can say I will not route for the Packers, I had a Green Bay trip planned for Sept.08, I have cancelled it.
Vince Lombardi is doing flips in the grave.

Posted by: mwilson | July 30, 2008 2:56 PM

The Packers are owned by shareholders (most Wisconsinites) and since most Wisconsinites want Favre back and Ted Thomspon won't do as the shareholders want Ted Thomspon should be fired as Executive Vice President, General Manager & Director of Football Operations for the Packers!

Posted by: RichB | July 30, 2008 3:23 PM

There are posts suggesting that this is entirely the media's fault. Brett in an "unassuming way" sent a text message.

How naive. Brett has spent 16 years working the media. His wife emails Greta, Peter King stays at his house for hours, and Chris Mortenson has "all access" to Brett's "thoughts". Brett has used the media as many in the public eye have and will continue to do.

Posted by: Rick | July 30, 2008 3:52 PM

brett retired in march. retired...cried and everything. i saw it. the team moved on. they planned their draft, OTA's, salary caps, etc assuming brett would not be around. why? because brett said he was retired. now he says, gee i really want to play but the team was mean to me so i dont want to play for them but i dont want to say it publically or look like a jerk. who's being the jerk here? it's easy to say cut him, but then you blow up the teams cap cause his money gets accelerated. trading him is another thing, but those dont happen so easy in the NFL. and why should they trade him to a team in their division. if a team in your divisions is so desperate at QB that they need to trade for brett, then i say let them go with the stiff they already have.

Posted by: brett is wrong | July 30, 2008 4:22 PM

I should give a disclaimer first. I love the Packers and I love to watch Brett Favre play.

The only thing worse than the Packers loss to the Giants in the NFC Championship and hearing that Brett retired is how management is treating this man.

We are a country of laws and not men. The Packers have a legal binding contract with him. If the Commission finds him eligible to play, so be it. LET HIM PLAY!!!

If my beloved Packers do not want # 4 running the offense then they need to trade him or set him free. You can't say we don't want you to play for us or anyone else. Frankly, if he wants to suit up and play. Then... LET HIM PLAY!!!!

Posted by: Jim | July 30, 2008 5:22 PM

I didn't read all of the comments, but of the ones I read TeriB, rick, Kathy's were excellent. I couldn't agree more!

Oh, and Tim-Now Favre is UNRETIRED, and still one of the best QBs in the league. Try to get that through your head.

i think farve should play so all yalls can canit

Posted by: Anonymous | July 30, 2008 9:41 PM

All im saying is I understand where the packers management are coming from to some extent. Sure Farve has 3 years left on his contract sure he could retire next year, and Aaron rodgers could really be using the playing time especially since he's suspossed to be our future QB. What happens if Aaron suck's and our season goes down the drain and we could've had Brett Farve back in the pocket who gives us the best opportunity to win now... Who takes the blame for that Ted Thompson, Mark Murphy, Mike Mcarthy, they all do.

Ps... And what the hell do I do with all my Brett Farve merchandise it's gonna suck wearing a Farve jersey next year and he's playing on another team????????

Posted by: gcruz8317 | July 31, 2008 10:48 AM

Shame on us all for feeding this nonsense. I am most impressed by Mike McCarthy insisting that whatever he has to say to Brett Favre he will say to Brett Favre not the media. I only hope they do get to talk soon -- and the whole thing gets resolved.
