Backup Quarterback Problems For Packers

The Green Bay Packers could feel a bit better about having Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback after his decent performance in Monday night's preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

But the feeling that they could be in big trouble if Rodgers gets hurt was reinforced by the shaky outing by rookie backup Brian Brohm.

Brohm, a second-round draft pick in April, threw an interception Monday and had a passer rating of 33.9. He was outperformed by fellow Packers rookie Matt Flynn, a seventh-round draft choice.

Brohm usually has struggled in offseason practices and training camp, and the Packers might have to consider moving Flynn ahead of Brohm on the depth chart.

It also seems possible that the team could revisit the idea of bringing in a veteran backup. Daunte Culpepper remains available. He rejected an offer by the Packers during the offseason, leading to speculation that he was seeking a chance to compete for a starting job.

Culpepper visited the Pittsburgh Steelers in recent days, but the team signed Byron Leftwich instead of Culpepper to replace the injured Charlie Batch as Ben Roethlisberger's backup.
