Conference Call of Union's Executive Committee Still Pending

The planned conference call of members of the ruling 10-member executive committee of the NFL Players Association didn't take place Tuesday. But people familiar with the process said they still expect the call to happen soon.

Richard Berthelsen, the union's interim executive director, said in a telephone interview Monday he expected the call to take place within a few days.

Members of the executive committee are to discuss plans for launching a search for a replacement for the late Gene Upshaw.

Berthelsen said in Monday's phone interview he'd told players he is committed to remaining with the union in some capacity through the completion of the current labor negotiations with the NFL's franchise owners.

Former players Troy Vincent, Trace Armstrong and Robert Smith are thought to be among the top candidates for the executive director job. Berthelsen has not said whether he will be a candidate.

The players on the executive committee are Domonique Foxworth, Drew Brees, Mike Vrabel, Brian Dawkins, Keenan McCardell, Tony Richardson, Mark Bruener, Jeff Saturday, Kevin Carter and Donovin Darius. The union president is Kevin Mawae.
