Confidence-Boosting Night For A. Rodgers
It's only the preseason, sure, but Aaron Rodgers seems to be settling down as he takes over for Brett Favre at quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.
Rodgers was sharp Friday night in Denver, completing 18 of 22 passes for 193 yards in the Packers' third preseason game.
He has a passer rating of 92.3 in the preseason.
Packers Coach Mike McCarthy and, especially, General Manager Ted Thompson have tied their professional reputations to Rodgers succeeding, and the former first-round draft pick and erstwhile Favre understudy on Friday resembled the promising young quarterback who played well while filling in for an injured Favre during a closely scrutinized game last season in Dallas.
No one can expect Rodgers to be the quarterback that Favre was last season. Most likely, even Favre would not have been able to duplicate last season's exploits if he'd stayed in Green Bay. But Thompson, McCarthy and the Packers need Rodgers to avoid being a bust, and he looked Friday like a quarterback capable of being in charge of a winning, playoff-contending team.
