Decision Looming For S. Merriman About Possible Knee Surgery
San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman has two torn ligaments in his left knee and intends to make a decision soon about whether to undergo surgery.
Merriman met with orthopedic specialists this week. The University of Maryland product rejoined the Chargers late in the week and spoke to reporters at a news conference today.
It previously had been reported that Merriman had a torn posterior cruciate ligament in the knee. He said today that he also has a torn lateral collateral ligament and his knee has been rendered unstable by the damage to the two ligaments.
The medical opinions given to Merriman reportedly have differed about how extensive of a surgical procedure he should undergo. He said he plans to see one more doctor in Miami in the coming days before making his decision about which course of treatment to follow.
