Favre Headed Home to Mississippi

Brett Favre has left Green Bay.

He flew out of town today on a plane reportedly headed back home to Mississippi.

Favre's departure from Green Bay comes as the Packers attempt to trade him to either the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or New York Jets.

Favre traveled from Hattiesburg, Miss., to Green Bay on Sunday after the league announced that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would reinstate Favre effective Monday afternoon. The Packers added Favre to their roster Monday but he didn't practice with the team after telling Coach Mike McCarthy during meetings Monday night and Tuesday that he wasn't committed to playing for the club this season, according to McCarthy.

Favre's 16-year tenure with the Packers apparently will end soon with a trade that might be completed today or Thursday. He retired in March but changed his mind in recent weeks. McCarthy said he was prepared to offer Favre a chance to compete with Aaron Rodgers for the starting job in Green Bay but Favre couldn't get over the contentiousness between the franchise and him since March.

Favre, should have taken the 20 million over 10 years and just retired. That was a heck of deal they offered him. I would have called it quits!

What a narcissist Favre is!

screw favre

He could play in the XFL. The name on his jersey could be, "GB Hate Me". Oh, wait. That league folded.

those that say take the money are folks that never had money.

Posted by: RacerX | August 6, 2008 5:45 PM

what an idiot... people liked this guy. i liked him i still.... wait heck no i dont like him anymore but i dont hate him either. he's done a lot for that franchise, as far as the community and greenbay goes i never heard alot of things he did outside football so i wont judge him on that. should have taken the money and retired.

Rogers is a toothpick and will break before the regular season even starts. And then they're stuck with two rookie quarterbacks. The Packer's organization is full of idiots.

Posted by: Rick | August 6, 2008 5:58 PM

Only TEAM Players belong on the PACKERS TEAM.

Posted by: JLW | August 6, 2008 6:07 PM

I agree with Favre, the Packer organization has more than one smart person whose job it is to figure these things out. If GB's intent was to move forward with Aaron Rogers why did they not release or trade Brett when he first asked them to? Either way he become's someone else's concern. I will never Boo Favre. He just can't stay retired, it is not that hard to imagine.

McCarthy 08 Packers 6-10, Vikings win NFC North without BF - what a deal!!! Packer Brass are IDIOTS!!!

Fav-re is douche. To hell with him -- and the peckers for that matter. I hope both him and the Greeen Bay Peckers rot in hell. Go bears!

Brent Favre: The ghost of Christmas past.

Posted by: george | August 6, 2008 6:27 PM

Wow, you wish a sports team would rot in hell.

Classy.

I've spent most of my life hating the Packers, but even I can respect Favre. In my opinion, the Packers owe more to Favre then he does to them. What I find upsetting is that the Packers want to get rid of him, but they won't let him go to anyone in the same division. We've hated Favre for so long, but man he could be a perfect fit for Chicago for a season or two.

I'm kind of tired of hearing all of the "I'm retiring...oh wait, no I'm not, No no yes I am....not." It all stems from the fact that our society makes these guys into heroes and they come to require the unending attention so they retire and then recant because they can't stand being out of the spotlight. I respected Farve for retiring on top, but he just couldn't stand it. So now he's just an attention Wh*re like the rest. Talk about stepping all over your legacy.

Posted by: Paul | August 6, 2008 6:34 PM

OK so he tugged on our emotions when he announced. OK so he changed his mind. Haven't we all? That's a crime? GB played games with him from then on. He won. Now GB wants to kick him to the curb. Well, all is fair in love and war. No problems so far. Personally, I can't wait to see his "new" team beat the snot out of GB.

Like it or not he was in a position to, and DID what he wanted to do for himself and his family. So be it, I'm envious too, just like most others. I don't hate him for it.

Looking for the big game though...

Posted by: The Great Santini | August 6, 2008 6:34 PM

Brett Favre wants to play, and if he wants just the money, he will grab what GB offered him for not doin' anything. He wants to prove
to himself that he could still play and since the bridge had been burned, it is a point of no return to play at GB.

Posted by: junior manila | August 6, 2008 6:35 PM

Screw Green Bay.....Favre was pushed out and then treated like crap. The coach and GM are just pissed cause Favre gets all the credit. Get a new QB and you can claim to be the bestest coach and GM in the world! when you win. Doubt they'll a good season with Rodgers for a couple of years but then it'll be all about them. Look at me!! I won without some old dude that was winning before I worked here.

Posted by: Blah | August 6, 2008 6:38 PM

I wish Favre would come to SF.

Posted by: Mister | August 6, 2008 6:39 PM

"FOR THE LOVE OF FOOTBALL" He doesn't care about money.. Just want to play like a little boy does... He have a HEART that shaped like football.. GO Favre!!

Posted by: Gary | August 6, 2008 6:40 PM

Favre was good, but was a loose cannon--always thinking HE had to make the impossible throw to save the game. Sometimes he did, mostly he threw interceptions in such situations. He would have been better if he was a leader rather than a star. Right now, in his mind, it's more about HIM than about the team. His playing coy gets tiresome-maybe I'll be back maybe not....show me how much you love me! Enough! Let him grow up somewhere else.

Posted by: Bill | August 6, 2008 6:43 PM

Favre will never retire. He is too greedy. He is not that smart. He doesn't know what else to do. He can't be an analyst like other smart retired players. He will play till he is 65 and then retire.

Posted by: Aaron | August 6, 2008 6:44 PM

With so much going on in the world, who really cares about Favre. Probably not very many.

Posted by: Morton H Zisk | August 6, 2008 6:44 PM

Who really cares about Favre

Posted by: Morton H Zisk | August 6, 2008 6:46 PM

When the media deified Favre after his second "retirement", his ego just wouldn't let him bow out gracefully. What would us mere mortal football fans do without having the divine pleasure of witnessing the newly crowned God of Green Bay throwing footballs?

Posted by: meter | August 6, 2008 6:46 PM

I have never idolized Favre for just the reason that people are seeing now. He has always been for number one even though he wanted eveyone to think he was a team player. He felt he was the Team and so did his Fans. You have to have more than one person to be a Team, Brett! Sometimes things are not just about 'ME'. I do feel that he has a very hard time when things aren't just about him. I do, however, hope he gets the help he needs.

Posted by: not surprised | August 6, 2008 6:47 PM

Favre just cares for himself. He was worried about his insurance premiums of 1000 dollars a month for his family. Why else he would want to come back and play? For the love of the game? I don't think so.

Posted by: Aaron | August 6, 2008 6:48 PM

For the die hard Green Bay fans, anyone replacing Brett Favre is going to have some BIG shoes to fill. Brett played with passion for the game, 160+ straight starts, played tough football and was a leader on and off the field. If money was his #1 motivator this would have played out very differently. Those who really follow the NFL know that Favre took pay cuts to get other players that he felt would give the Packers the best chance for a SuperBoawl appearance. In the end, Brett Favre will be regarded as one of the greatest QB's the league has ever seen.

I hated to see Jerry Rice leave the 49ners to go to the Raiders and eventually end his NFL career in Seattle. I have a hard time seeing Favre go to Tampa Bay or the Jets.

From one Brett to another, I wish you well pal.

Posted by: Brett Morey | August 6, 2008 6:50 PM

The dude is an icon and I can't stand GB. Cowboys to da bowl baby. Brett is one of the best QBs that has ever played the game and after last season in my book has the ability to carry an organization to the bowl if the offensive line can keep him safe.

GB should have given him whatever he wanted period.

Bunch of numbnuts if you ask me and yes I can't wait to see him beat the crap out of his old team

Posted by: ya right | August 6, 2008 6:52 PM

Stick to your word douche. Just when I thought that fat cow Madden will stop talking about imbred Favre he decides he wants to come back.

I say we leave him in GB and we give Wisconsin to Canada then we nuke Canada. Any Bears fan who thinks the imbred would be good for us needs to kill themself.

GO BEARS!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Favre Is a FRUIT | August 6, 2008 6:52 PM

I think it is ridiculous that you don't want one of the game's greatest quaterback's of all time to come back and play for your team. Hell I would take Dan Marino if he wanted to come out of retirement. I understand Green Bay's frustration but they are just as greedy for not trading him to anyone in the division. I would love to see him in a Bear's uniform. As for the other potential teams Tampa is too hott Favre is a cold weather player. Jets are a good spot...they got the same color in their uniforms. and Minnesota would be stupid...Favre doesn't play in a dome...he throws snowballs around. As for Favre playing in Green Bay I hate him like I always have in that uniform.

Posted by: Ryan | August 6, 2008 6:53 PM

Bret has been as much a part of Green Bay as cheese is to Wisconsin. He has made that team a force to reckon with.Without him they will suck.Their starter will be hurt before the regular season begins.I would like to have in in Chicago for a year.I wish him luck wherever he goes he is the Michael Jordan of the Packers

Posted by: Bill | August 6, 2008 6:53 PM

Very sad to see Favre behave so odd. His crying jag was over the top.

Posted by: Dudley | August 6, 2008 6:54 PM

I've been a packer fan since 1965 - Doctors Thompson and McCarthy are surgically removing the heart and soul of the team. 08' Packers without Favre will be 6-10 at best. Packer brassheads will roll because of very poor decisions and disloyalty to Favre, not to mention their insulting bribe.

Posted by: Bruce K | August 6, 2008 6:56 PM

Screw Green Bay, I think they have handled this situation like little kids. If I was Favre, I wouldn't want to work for them anymore either.

Let's just hope they lose every game this year, and I was a Green Bay fan.

Favre deserves to play, he doesn't need the money, he wants to play because it's in him.

Posted by: PEP | August 6, 2008 6:58 PM

It sounds like GB wants their cake and eat it too. Won't trade him to a team in their division. If they are so afraid of his talent, why don't they just let him play? This "we don't want him but we don't want anyone else to have him either" logic is messed up.

Posted by: trip | August 6, 2008 7:01 PM

Former fan until Ted Thompson and company are run out of title town, only then will I consider resuming my life long passion for Green Bay football. Brett Favre has given the fans so much joy over 16 years, it will take years to repair the damage a couple of carpetbaggers have brought to a simple town with an extraordinary football legacy. They do not understand what the Green Bay Packers mean to not only Green Bay but the entire state of Wisconsin and I doubt they will ever understand because their egos are way to inflated for a place like Green Bay. They need to be run out of town the same way they ushered the greatest quarter back ever out. Don't let the door hit you in the behind!

Posted by: former gb from dallas fan | August 6, 2008 7:02 PM

I just don't get it! The guy is a Hall of Fame QB and Rogers in unproven, why wouldn't you want him back?

Posted by: Rick | August 6, 2008 7:11 PM

In opera they're called DIVAS,in entertainment they're called Brittany, Madonna and Paris, in the NFL they're called quarterbacks.

If you want to know why Favre can afford to think he's more than a wage earner for a big corporation, take a look at the nearest jerk who's willing to pay $100.00 for a ticket + $38.00 for parking.

We made them, we're stuck with them.

Posted by: gafish | August 6, 2008 7:13 PM

I've always thought Favre to be a bit overrated, but he is still a solid QB. I think Green Bay screwed up, not letting him leave gracefully.

Posted by: Rhettro | August 6, 2008 7:19 PM

I say it again. Fav-re is a double talking douche and the Green Bay Peckers are, well, a bunch of pecker heads. I hope they both rot in hell -- and in the case of the Peckers get swept by DA BEARS.

Go Bears.

FavreGate was and is mainly about Ted Thompson's fragile ego:

1) By allowing Favre back after forcing him into retirement in March, Thompson would have had to admit that Farve is bigger than the Packers organization itself (and he is).

2) No doubt taking their lead from Thompson, not once during FavreGate did I hear any Packers' representative even casually mention consideration of the fans' wishes. It was all "the PACKERS ORGANIZATION feels this way," "WE want that", "this won't allow US to do that." Anyone with even a smidgen less egocentricity would have made mention of the fans feelings and desires (and despite Item 1 above).

3) By delegating delivery of the "bad news" to McCarthy last night, Thompson not only confirmed the fragility of his ego, he also demonstrated his cowardice. Great leader!

I think he has a right to do what he is doing. But, you cannot act like you are a

primadonna and expect people to trip all
over themselves for you. Maybe nobody will pick him up. Who knows ?

Season is gonna suck 4 cheeseheads everywhere... Aaron Rodgers sux so bad... this is a conspiracy and the GB coach will rot in hell someday for stealing all hope from Packers fans... shame shame

Hey Brett come on up north

We would love to have you in the CFL!

Posted by: CFL EH | August 6, 2008 9:21 PM

Oh my god, you Favre Defenders are nuts. Like so many issues these days, people rush to choose sides and run on the internet to post their ill-informed opinions.

Before 2007, Favre was in steady decline.

He was consistently losing more games for the Packers than he was helping them win.

Yes, he's a legend, but even legends must eventually retire. While Favre can live for the day, only thinking of himself, McCarthy and Thompson have to think of the Packers long term. EVEN FAVRE ADMITS TO KNOWING THIS!!

This has nothing to do with Rodgers, and the attacks on him are unwarranted. Rational, intelligent people wouldn't need to be reminded of this.

You people who think Favre should have been allowed to flip-flop indefinitely need to tell me what exactly should the Packers 5 year plan have been? Rodgers' contract is up in two years, and Favre's waffling played a direct role in the draft selections they made in 2008 (incl 2 QB's.) If Favre had come back before the draft, something Favre-Hating Ted Thompson was GOING TO DO before #4 waffled again, Favre likely would have returned to his pre-2007 form and the team would have been stuck with their pants down when Favre finally called it quits for real. Favre retired, Rodgers getting the hell away from a team that just wasted the last 5 years of his life, and no one ready to take over.

Also, the Packer's were not "bribing" Favre. Again, if any of you knew the facts, you'd know this was a marketing deal that had been in the works before Favre's retirement and involved setting up long-term compensation for his future marketing and promotion activities for the team. They were only trying to sweeten this deal in order to influence Favre to stay retired and thus end his career with the same team. You cant hold that against them. Favre & Bus Cook certainly weren't. It's just something else in this saga that's been perverted into something to hold against Packer management.

Favre was a great QB and a Packer legend. No one, including me, will ever take that away from him. But in the end he probably lost as many games for the Packers as he won (take a look through his post-season stats - I dare you - it's not pretty.) He wasn't much of a leader within the team, as that role fell to other players. He spent very little time in Wisconsin and had almost no presence in the community. And he's consistently made an ass of himself by having his family talk for him. He has his mom, brother, et al calling Wisconsin sports writers, planting stories that Brett later denies, only to later on admit. And enough already with Bus Cook, football's Scott Boras. Typical selfish agent who may be the puppeteer in this sorry tale. After 15 years of this, I'm ready for a change.

In the end, I have the utmost respect for what Favre did between the sidelines for the past 15 years, but off the field of play, I'm really not so sure he's that deserving of our respect, much less these passionate but fanatical, uninformed and overly emotional defenses being put up for him. You people are humiliating yourselves.

Posted by: Tom in Cheeseland | August 7, 2008 1:19 AM

McCarthy and Thompson are perfectly save in their jobs, as Packer brass expressed full confidence that they've handled the situation the best they could.

If anything, the Packer's management should have been less politically correct, gone straight to the press, and more forcefully told their side of the story.

Good riddance Favre.
