Feely's Availability Makes For Some Uneasy Kickers Around the NFL

Just about every kicker in the league now has to look over his shoulder, with Jay Feely available as a free agent.

The Miami Dolphins released Feely on Tuesday even though he connected on 21 of 23 field goal attempts for the team last season. Dolphins Coach Tony Sparano said that undrafted rookie Dan Carpenter had outperformed Feely since the start of training camp. With Feely sidelined by a groin injury, Carpenter had field goals of 41 and 49 yards in the preseason opener.

Feely has been quoted as saying he was told by club officials they wanted the team to get younger. In addition, it's well known that new Dolphins front office chief Bill Parcells isn't exactly fond of injured kickers. Feely also has been an outspoken player during his career and most NFL teams generally don't admire that trait, especially in a kicker.

But he has demonstrated that he can kick, and there's little doubt that he'll land a job somewhere in the coming weeks. Feely's name already has come up in Kansas City as a possible addition to the Chiefs' kicking mix.

The 32-year-old Feely has been successful on 80.8 percent of his field goal tries in seven NFL seasons for the Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants and Dolphins. He made a 53-yarder last season for the Dolphins, his longest field goal since his rookie season in 2001.

They're worried about Feely? Not Vanderjagt coming back from the Argonauts?
