Gates's Toe Improving But Merriman's Knee Could Be Problem For Chargers
Tight end Antonio Gates was activated from the physically unable to perform list and participated in portions of the San Diego Chargers' practice Tuesday.
Gates took part in individual passing drills but did not participate in full team drills.
The Chargers continue to bring him back slowly from the toe injury that plagued him during last season's AFC playoffs.
The injury news wasn't as good for the Chargers regarding linebacker Shawne Merriman, who reportedly is headed to Birmingham to have a bothersome knee examined by orthopedist James Andrews.
The North County Times reported that Merriman continues to experience pain in his left knee after Andrews performed surgery on it five months ago to repair cartilage damage.
Merriman is scheduled to rejoin the team Thursday, the newspaper reported.
