Memorial Service For Upshaw Planned for Sept. 2 in D.C.

A public memorial service for Gene Upshaw, the late executive director of the NFL Players Association, is being planned for Sept. 2 in Washington.

A union official confirmed those plans but said he did not know further details yet about the site or time of day.

Upshaw died Wednesday at a home he owned in California near Lake Tahoe, three days after going to a nearby hospital for tests that led to him being diagnosed with an aggressive form of pancreatic cancer.

He was honored this weekend with a moment of silence at each NFL preseason game.
