More About the Plan to Shorten the Preseason

Clarifying one point related to today's story in the print edition about the NFL's likely future reduction of the preseason and lengthening of the regular season...

The players are paid FOR the preseason. They're just not paid DURING the preseason.

NFL players are paid their salaries in 17 installments during the regular season. They receive no portion of their salaries during the preseason.

But according to the league, the players, under the salary cap system, receive 60 percent of all revenues generated during the preseason, just as they receive 60 percent of revenues generated during the regular season.

Just wanted to make sure everyone understands.

Of course, that doesn't change the overall point: The owners say they don't like the preseason product and they think they can generate more revenues by shortening the preseason and lengthening the regular season.

The probable outcome is that the NFL will go to an 18-game regular season beginning in 2010 as part of a new labor deal with the players' union, as New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft said in today's print story he supports.

GREED!!! It will eventually kill this great game of football the preseason is too long, two to three games is enough to evaluate players with what they make they should be in shape year round. Sixteen games is fine unless there is going to be an expansion of rosters then the number of games can be increased the season drags on anyway, it eventually becomes a war of attricion, don't kill the golden goose.

Speaking as a Jets season ticket holder, I'd like to see one more of the ten games I have to buy be a "real game". Regardless of how many Jets games are actually meaningful, lol. Especially with the new stadium opening in 2010.

I'd rather pay for the "real" games than waste money on meaningless Pre-season games.
