More McCarthy on Favre
Some leftovers from Mike McCarthy's press conference Tuesday evening that didn't make today's story in the print version:
On his meetings with Brett Favre becoming session to rehash everything that had happened between the team and quarterback in recent months: "That's what it turned into. That was not my intent when the meeting started."
On why he went from proclaiming Aaron Rodgers the team's starter to potentially offering Favre a chance to compete for the job: "Until Brett Favre was reinstated, I was not going to participate in hypotheticals."
On why he felt Favre's mindset should keep Favre from joining the Packers' practices: "I didn't get the answers to the questions that I was looking for. So why would I do that to my football team? That would be poor leadership. It's not a popularity contest. I wasn't going to go there."
On the competition that wasn't: "I'm sure it would have been a helluva fight."
On whether Favre wasn't ready to play in Green Bay, or wasn't ready to play for any team: "I would just say here in Green Bay. He wants to play."
On his approach to Favre's prospective comeback all offseason: "Throughout the whole process, I did not think he was going to play this year."
On the mindset of the other Packers players: "They definitely want this thing resolved as soon as possible."
