Odds Stacked Against On-Field Success For Favre, Jets This Season
Since Brett Favre was traded to the New York Jets last week, there has been this widespread assumption, it seems, that all will work out fine and the Jets suddenly will be a much-improved team and a playoff contender in the AFC.
Hold on.
All of that is possible. Favre is one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in the history of the sport. Eric Mangini appears to be at least a halfway decent coach, last season notwithstanding. The Jets already had spent big money in the free agent market to upgrade their roster earlier in the offseason, and just about every year in the NFL there is a team that comes out of nowhere to make big noise.
But while trading for Favre is sure to be a huge success on the marketing side of the operation for the Jets, immediately making them relevant again both in the NFL and on the New York sports scene, it is less than certain that the move will make the Jets a big success on the field this season.
Favre is going to a team where he knew virtually no one upon arriving. He didn't know the coaches. He didn't know the offensive system, and he arrived with only a month before the regular season to learn it. He went to a team that won only four games last season.
It is a recipe to fail, not a recipe to succeed.
If Favre and the Jets do manage to turn the circumstances of his arrival in New York into a successful season, on the field as well as off of it, they will have done something indeed.

Wow...are you 12. It's nice to spew irrelevant opinion, but come on man....is this a blog?

I didn't know that The Washington Post was now hiring their sports writers right out of High School..

My 4 year old daughter could write a more intriguing article. You suck bud.

Wow. Insightful. Not judging your "piece" based on your opinion, but rather on style and content, I hope you really don't consider yourself a writer. If you do, good luck my friend.

All you have said is that it isn't certain. Well, duh.

"Favre is going to a team where he knew virtually no one upon arriving"... Knowledge and familiarity are necessary for success?
How long you covering sports?
"He didn't know the offensive system",
He's never thrown a pass before? All offenses are the same with their own flavor based on individual skills of the players on the turf.
"he arrived with only a month before the regular season" his tenure in the NFL counts for nothing?
"He went to a team that won only four games last season." Well now, IF FAVRE was the ONLY personnel change, this would be a valid statement.
Unfortunately this article is terribly prepared and has no substance. Your pen should be like a gun... Don't take it out, unless you're prepared to use it... :)
I AM a JET fan, I AM a Pennington fan.. BUT FAVRE is a major upgrade at the position, his Hall of Fame Credentials are welcome and his durability, Cal Ripkein like superman powers are much needed. He will undoubtedly make mistakes, BUT the fans are more forgiving than the media, who will choose to make something out of nothing, like this article...

Your career is a recipe not to succeed, but to fail. First, you do not know what you are talking about. Secondly, do you know what football is? I thought so. Go back to school until you master the art of being a little more vague.

this "article" is ridiculous. i hope this guy is not a salaried writer.

If the Jets can get 3 years out of Favre look out. He has never been given the tools in GB that he needed to be a winner. For the most part he has carried the Pack on his back since the walrus left. If the Jets will commit to improving, Brett will. He was even willing to pay Moss out of his own pocket. This is the guy he is, committ to winning and he will give his life.

I bet this writer is a patriots fan, looking for some encouragement! Done get me wrong,I would do the same when I'm coming off an offseason in which my QB was hanging around with giselle instead of worked out. Brett is in better shape already!!

Let me do my own professional writing here.
The Jets will be bad. Mangini OK coach.
Hold On.
Jets spent money. Brett has 1 month to learn new offense. This not good.
Hmmm....So I managed to sum up your paragraph of an article in a few incomplete sentences. Someone needs to quit their day job.

C'mon guys. Mark is an NFL Insider. You can't get that indepth insight anywhere. You have to be atleast 500 miles away from Jersey to have your finger that close to the pulse.
Why don't you stick to covering the Skins. Most Warshington fans can't read big words, anyway.

Thank you captain obvious! you spent your entire article listing what everybody already knows, and why this just might work out fine. The Jets addressed the very things that made them a 4-12 team last season. I read your article expecting some new revelation instead you retreaded, prehaps the odds are stacked that you will mail in your next article instead of digging deeper i.e work a little harder.

My god this is awful. I'm not a jet fan but how can anyone get paid to write this stuff? please let me know, I could use the extra money for something like Weird Al concert tix.
How far has the Post sunk? What a shame.

Mark, did you ride to work on a short bus?
Anytime I read any writer mention how the Jets performed last year and assume it will carry over to this year, I know they are legally retarded.
There was a reason why the Jets performed poorly last year: a crappy O-line, torn ligaments in Penny's ankle plus other injuries, missing personnel on defense, etc. The Jets have addressed those problems. How about mentioning how the Jets performed in 2006? Do some research you lazy hack. These are the same putzes who are surprised when, every year, teams "come out of nowhere" and reach the playoffs. Maybe if you paid attention a bit, you won't be surprised when the Jets and Dolphins both reach the playoffs as wildcard teams. Dolphins may be a surprise, but the Jets shouldn't be, they would have made the playoffs even before the Favre trade.

thank you for wasting 3 minutes of my life, i am now dumber for having read your article that states nothing we didnt already know, nor does it prove any points etc.. Mark, I am more of an NFL insider than you are. thanks for coming out

All Jet fans are desperate....Favre stinks
and so do the Jets!
Posted by: Fred | August 13, 2008 11:17 AM
Mr Washington Post, where did you get this guy - get rid of him quickly.
Posted by: jetsfan | August 13, 2008 3:07 PM
Mark, u dumb. My mammy say I right more good than yu, i think to. So Farve's years of experience and success in Green Bay amount to nothing. Or how about his beginning in Green Bay the year after his rookie year coming in with no knowledge of the system and knowing no one yet coming back in his first game and turning out a decent season. I'm glad I don't subscribe to the Washington Post as you are the worst writer with a degree I've ever come across. Hell, even Forrest Gump could give you some pointers. The Jets are going to improve with Farves assistance along with free agent add-ons in the off season.
