O'Sullivan Named Niners' Starter Entering Season
Coach Mike Nolan said it official today and named J.T. O'Sullivan the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers entering the regular season.
The 49ers began training camp with a quarterback competition between Alex Smith, the former top overall selection in the NFL draft, and Shaun Hill, who'd played well late last season when Smith was hurt. O'Sullivan, a journeyman with his eighth NFL team, was an afterthought.
But he quickly became a factor in part because of his familiarity with the offensive system of new 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz. The two were together last season with the Detroit Lions. And it became evident in recent weeks that O'Sullivan was leading the competition.
It's a stunning fall from grace for Smith, who was drafted to be the team's franchise quarterback but has struggled with injuries and disappointing results and has clashed in the past with Nolan.
Nolan said in a conference call with reporters today that Smith will begin the season as the club's No. 2 quarterback, with Hill third.
"He's played well in all three preseason games and now it's time to get ready for the season," Nolan said of O'Sullivan in the conference call.
