O'Sullivan's Job in S.F.?

Journeyman quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan may have moved a step closer to winning the starting job in San Francisco with a crisp performance for the 49ers in Thursday night's exhibition game against the Chicago Bears.

O'Sullivan made the start and completed 7 of 8 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.

And if 49ers Coach Mike Nolan and offensive coordinator Mike Martz indeed are going to demote former top overall draft pick Alex Smith to a backup role, Smith made it a bit easier with his 6-for-17 outing against the Bears.

Shaun Hill followed Smith into the game and connected on 6 of 7 throws for 60 yards.

Alex Smith might be up there with Heath Schuler on bust factor, what do you think Mark Maske?

It's starting to look that way, isn't it? I wouldn't put the word bust on him quite yet, but the trend line certainly is going downward.
