Panthers Suspend S. Smith For Two Games

The Carolina Panthers have suspended wide receiver Steve Smith for two games for Friday's training camp fight with cornerback Ken Lucas.

Under the collective bargaining agreement, a team can suspend a player for as many as four games without pay for conduct detrimental to the team.

Panthers Coach John Fox indicated that Lucas suffered a broken nose in the fight, the Associated Press reported.

Smith is to return to practice with the Panthers on Monday and is to participate in preseason games before missing the first two games of the regular season.

The suspension will cost Smith just less than $206,000 of his $1.75 million salary.
