Players' Conference Call Likely to Come This Weekend
A person familiar with the union's deliberations over its pending search for a new executive director said today he expects the players' ruling 10-member executive committee to speak via conference call this weekend.
The executive committee likely will vote then to launch the search, the person said, but might not make a public announcement until after Tuesday's memorial service at the Kennedy Center for Gene Upshaw, the union's executive director for 25 years who died last week.
The players had attempted to schedule the conference call for Monday or Tuesday of this week but were unable to do so because of players' other commitments with preseason games being played Thursday and Friday, the source said.
Richard Berthelsen, the union's interim executive director, said in a telephone interview Monday he expected the conference call to take place soon.
