Quarterback Updates

Some quarterback updates for teams on which the starter is less than certain...

Baltimore... The guess here is that the Ravens will keep rookie Joe Flacco on the bench for a little while and choose Troy Smith over Kyle Boller as the temporary starter until Flacco is ready to play. But it's just a guess. Anything could still happen.

Miami... Chad Pennington was signed to be the starter, and second-round draft pick Chad Henne should make the roster. That probably leaves the Dolphins cutting either John Beck or Josh McCown.

Chicago... Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton are said to be about even. There simply doesn't appear to be an attractive option here.

Atlanta... Why not go with rookie Matt Ryan as the starter right from the beginning? It's not like this team is going to win anything, anyway, and the alternatives are Chris Redman, Joey Harrington and D.J. Shockley. Let Ryan take his lumps and learn.

San Francisco... J.T. O'Sullivan is said to be outperforming Alex Smith and Shaun Hill in practices. But are the 49ers really ready to give up on Smith, the former top overall selection in the NFL draft, to have him back up a journeyman?

K.C... The Chiefs seemed interested in Pennington but didn't land him. That leaves Brodie Croyle still as the starter ahead of Damon Huard.

Buffalo... The Bills say they're committed to Trent Edwards as the starter, but they still have J.P. Losman on the roster as a possible alternative if Edwards falters early in the season.
