Ravens' F. Washington Suspended For Opener Under Conduct Policy
The NFL has suspended Baltimore Ravens cornerback Fabian Washington without pay for the opening game of the regular season for violating the league's personal conduct policy.
"We had knowledge of Fabian's situation prior to the trade we made for him," Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome said in a written statement released by the team. "Based on the NFL's personal conduct policy, and Fabian's agreement with the authorities, we knew that a suspension was a possibility. Fabian knows his actions were a mistake and has taken appropriate actions since then."
Washington, who was traded from the Oakland Raiders to the Ravens in April, was arrested in Florida in February on a domestic battery charge but was not prosecuted because he completed a program for first-time offenders.
"I put myself in a bad situation, and I did not handle it the right way," Washington said in a written statement released by the Ravens. "I was wrong and made a mistake. My girlfriend, my attorney and I wanted a quick resolution and knew that a suspension could happen."
Washington missses the Ravens' opener Sept. 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals in Baltimore. Washington was notified of the suspension between the Ravens' two practices today, according to the team.
The former first-round draft choice remains eligible to participate in all preseason practices and exhibition games.
