Some Thoughts on Merriman's Decision to Play
One could look at linebacker Shawne Merriman's decision to try to play for the San Diego Chargers this season with two torn knee ligaments as either extremely tough and devoted or extremely foolish.
Either way, he's taking an enormous risk.
Merriman has said he has torn posterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments. He reportedly was advised by doctors not affiliated with the team to undergo reconstructive surgery that would sideline him all season. He has said he would be at increased risk for a more serious knee injury if he tries to play without surgery.
It's understandable, and admirable in a way, that Merriman wants to play if he can, especially in what potentially could be a Super Bowl season for the Chargers.
But he's still a young player who should have many more seasons and many more sacks in his NFL future. If we have heard the facts accurately and he really is ignoring the advice of the very outside specialists he sought out for their opinions, his decision seems to potentially border on shortsighted and reckless.

FAB88 - Shawn is signed through 2009.
Mark - Nice post, and it seems everybody except Shawn agree's with you. He needs to shut it down this year and think of the next 8-10 years. Otherwise, this year could be his last.

Merriman should think about the future. He's risking not only his NFL career, but his ability to walk normally for the rest of his life. He already has damaged cartilage in the same knee -- he will only last (with the brace) until someone either tackles him by the injured leg or he gets it stuck in the grass and ruptures or completely tears his muscles...

Maybe if he stopped juicing he'd actually feel the pain his knee's in.
