Lost in Translation

(Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)

I went to the U.S. men's basketball team practice at Beijing Normal University, a few miles from the main press center.

Got a cab back with reporter Michael Lee, and when we tried to enter through security, we were stopped and told we needed a new sticker.

We just assumed they changed the rules at this one checkpoint, so we walked to the next one, where we encountered at total mess.

Hundreds of journalists were being denied access because of this sticker. I'd say there were about 50 different languages being shouted in the direction of the security. Funny thing was, each language carried the same condemning tone and inflection.

Found out later that the stickers were for a few journalists for opening ceremonies. Good thing it happened yesterday instead of today.
